Too bad that the Sony XPERIA XZ3 is not supplied with popcorn as an accessory as its new 4K HDR OLED display is like a movie theater in your hands. It even vibrates with suspenseful movies and tingles and pulses through your hand thanks to the Dynamic Vibration System. This has been seen on most XPERIA flagships in recent years, but it just seems like a good idea as it is now combined with this gorgeous new display. In this regard, the XZ3 is so good that you can almost forget that it is a phone designed primarily for communicating with others. In fact, it's the third mobile phone launched by Sony this year, after the XZ2, launched in January, and the XZ2 Premium, which is just three months old. At first glance, the XZ3 does not look different; Sony has maintained a similar design and made only minor adjustments, which are essentially about the wonderful display and the color palette. There is another operating system, but it is one of the first (not from Google). Mobile phones come with Android Pie fresh out of the box - the recently introduced Samsung Galaxy Note 9 not.
But is all this enough to cut it in a highly competitive smartphone market? Is this even an improvement enough to release another installment in the XPERIA range soon? A rushed movie with terrible drama and faint script will not be rescued by eye-catching special effects. The same is true for modern smartphones - a super-display cannot save a device that is not much cop in the other departments. So we have to ask: Is the XPERIA XZ3 a flagship device too much or is this a smartphone blockbuster?
The design is so familiar; The XZ3 could easily have been called 'XZ2 Premium, Premium', as the last two XPERIA models from Sony hardly differ. It's not a bad-looking phone, the curved edges of the screen are almost wrapped around the case - similar to the Samsung Galaxy S9 - but it does not really stand out. The screen is pretty and tall, with modest, notch-free bezels at the top and bottom, though the bottom bezel has a slight point of criticism where a Sony logo takes up too much space to display. We prefer this pointless marketing on the back where pretty much every other smartphone holds it.
Sony's Bravia TV technology has been producing cinema-quality TVs for years - even movie theaters like the popular Vue chain are using Sony's 4K digital projection technology - and this pedigree has found its way into the XPERIA range. Although the XZ3 is not the first device with a 4K display, but the first Sony phone that has an OLED screen, and offers the most incredible colors and contrasts. This is supported by the result of the 99% color gamut. a damn near-perfect result, which is just about every other device in its price range of 700 euros. This makes the XZ3 perfect for people who use their device as a portable TV, which is pretty much us. Streaming services clearly recognize the amount that we see on the move, because in most cases you can temporarily download content from their apps to your device and conveniently store your data. So, if you watch a horror movie about Netflix on Halloween, you'll be overwhelmed (or repelled) by the vivid details of the bloody scenes of the movie, beautifully presented on the XZ3's 6-inch display. With resolutions of QHD + 1,440 x 2,880, it has everything to suit any movie.
The XZ3 also scores points with equivalent competitors in terms of performance, but this is largely due to the fact that it has the same source. As with most flagship phones, it is powered by an Octa-core Snapdragon 845 chip clocking at 2.8 GHz. Sony has paired this with 4GB of RAM and a healthy onboard memory of 64GB. Performance is very good as our Geekbench 4 tests achieved single core scores of 2,400 and multicore scores of 8,950. These values are slightly above the Samsung Galaxy S9, but at the level of its predecessor XZ2. This may indicate a lack of progress, but it is in fact a sign of consistency, especially as there are significant improvements elsewhere that could have absorbed more juice. There was a bit to be desired in terms of GPU performance, however, due to the sophisticated 4K display with built-in resolution.
