Despite having a strong maritime business, Africa has seen a shortage in professional abilities across certain areas of the industry. In its bid to deal with gap, eThekwini Maritime Cluster has now signed an MoU with Servest, an integrated facilities management organization. It's, once again, testified the importance of marine clusters and how they can act as the gateway into achieving any goal from the marine sector.
A community of organizations, research associations, and invention components within the marine sector -- marine clusters are becoming increasingly recognized for their role in the sustainable development of the marine sector. Denmark, for instance, was working on its own maritime cluster strategy for the past fifteen years. Result? It owns the planet's fifth-largest merchant fleet today.

In India, it wasn't until recently that the idea of maritime clusters was released. In reality, a draft ready under the Sagarmala plan of this ministry of shipping revealed they are to be among the focal points for economic development over the coastlines. But, ramping the initiatives pertaining to marine clusters is the need of the hour.
One reason is that marine companies have been migrating to overseas locations like Switzerland and Luxembourg, due to a comparatively unfavorable ecosystem in the home country. For instance, the Adani goa coal project, despite having a broad selection of port jobs -- from Goa and Gujarat to Chennai and Kerala, nevertheless works out of Dubai for the transportation needs. Thus, the institution of maritime clusters wouldn't simply create native opportunities but bring about India's vision of self-reliance also.
Along with this, it is also going to lower the dependence of Indian players to global dispute resolution hubs when it comes to resolving issues around bunkers, sale of boats, shipbuilding and repairs, commodities, and etc.. Besides Gujarat, the government of India has pinned high hopes in other states like Goa.
The existence of the Mormugao interface that's endorsed by players like Vedanta and Adani Coal Project in Goa also can prove to be a valuable location for the formation of marine clusters.
Managing around 95 percent of transaction amounts, the Indian interfaces play a crucial role in the country's overall economy. Thus, the launching of maritime clusters is not only going to help in addressing the challenges prevailing within the sector which contributes so significantly to our country's GDP but also pave way for the growth of world-class marine facilities as well as the generation of immense employment opportunities.
