Going to the spa isn't something you can only do on rare occasions. You don't need to go far to replicate that calming and revitalising environment in your own house.

We discussed bathroom spa designs with designer Ola Elmaghraby. Her advice on how to turn your Ottawa bathroom remodel into a relaxing retreat is below.

Firstly, choose soothing hues.

Using colours that are relaxing on the eyes is a simple and cheap method to create a calming atmosphere. The walls of a luxurious spa bathroom should be decorated in soothing neutral tones like white, beige, or light grey.

Keep on; don't just stop there. The "oasis" atmosphere is achieved by "natural components," Ola adds. Floating shelves or a stool beside the bathtub are just two examples of how she proposes incorporating rustic wood into the room. In addition, you should use plant containers. Plants make a space more aesthetically pleasing and healthier since their oxygenating presence reduces stress. (Think of all the fresh air you'll enjoy in your new, peaceful home!)

Choose Countertops and Tiles with Style

Go with a neutral color scheme throughout the bathroom, from the flooring to the countertops. Choose a material that induces a soothing effect on you as you look at it. As Ola points out, "Granite may be black and quite busy, so it won't always have a spa-like effect." Marble and quartz feature understated patterns that make them ideal for a tranquil bathroom or spa.

Moreover, she elaborates on how the visual effect of tile size may alter how space is understood. Her ideal size for spa bathroom floor tiles is 24"x24". Even in tight quarters, this is true. Nevertheless, if you're going for a calm, soothing vibe, using smaller tiles or making elaborate mosaics might deceive our brain into thinking the area is crowded.

Avoid Complicated Lighting and Use Plain Mirrors

A reflection of yourself. It's one of those mundane necessities we use daily but only give much thought to once something goes wrong. There is no denying the dramatic effect of mirror fashion on interior decoration. Ola suggests avoiding anything with a "large frame or furniture-type style" since this will not create a relaxing atmosphere.

If you're looking for a mirror for your bathroom, she says to "keep it basic and select a little frame or go frameless totally." Simple doesn't have to equal dull; layered, slanted, or illuminated minimalist mirrors are stunning.

Although brass and gold accents may be fashionable, Ola notes they don't create a spa-like atmosphere. A spa-like bathroom is what she's after, so she's putting in black or brushed nickel fixtures. She says that while trying to recreate a spa atmosphere, you should avoid calling attention to things like faucets, doorknobs, or drawer handles. On the other hand, the streamlined design of these fixtures is soothing to the eye.

Put in a lot of ingenious places to put things.

Keeping your spa-like environment clean and clutter-free requires constant attention to detail. One common error in bathroom layout is the need for more storage space. The correct bathroom vanity will provide a place to store your towels, toiletries, and other necessities.

To assist his customers in achieving a spa-like atmosphere in their bathrooms, Ola recommends floating vanities and linen towers. That requires some work, she says, but the improved quality is worth it. "The wall needs more packing to hold the cabinet and countertop," she explains. Yet, once installed, her customers like the modern aesthetic.

Ola offers various design ideas for tight areas. Elegant containers and displays, such as glassware, are the answer. You can keep your toiletries in order by placing them neatly on a tray instead of cramming them into a cupboard. She says a wooden tray or stool placed next to a bathtub is ideal for holding a book, a glass of wine, or a hot cup of tea.

The 5 Best Ways to Improve Your Bathroom

Install a freestanding tub if there is room and money for it; these tubs look great, and it's more likely that you'll have the relaxing soak you've always wanted in a standalone tub than a built-in one. Ola suggests spending on a steam shower to turn your bathroom into a spa.

If none of these solutions works, have no fear! You can choose from various alternative bathtubs when updating your bathroom. To begin creating a spa-like environment, install a rain shower head. This newer showerhead offers a more expansive spray pattern and more sophisticated controls.

Assess your current curtain before proceeding. For a more relaxing spa experience, may a glass partition be installed in its place? If it needs to be longer, you should get a new one. Why? A longer shower curtain may have the same effect as stylish floor-to-ceiling curtains in expanding the visual field of space.

Finally, Ola likes the wooden bath mats often seen at spas. Putting a water-resistant cedar or teak bath mat next to your tub or shower is a great way to bring the beauty of wood into your bathroom. It has a decorative and practical purpose.

Incorporate Cutting-Edge Technology

A towel warmer or radiant flooring are just two examples of how technology may create a bathroom that feels like a luxury resort. Although Ola agrees that heated towels are fantastic, she also notes that modern smart home solutions may make a huge difference in the quality of your house. "Modern smart speakers allow you to control the ambiance and play any music or podcasts you choose."

(Or, if you're fortunate enough to have a gas fireplace in or near your restroom, picture speaking the phrase and hearing a crackling fire come to life!)

Let There Be Light 7

Ola prioritizes plenty of natural light while designing spa bathrooms. She thinks that natural light should be maximized by installing plenty of windows and skylights and that transparent glass is better than frosted. Pot lights on dimmers, as opposed to sconces or chandeliers, are one of Ola's proposed lighting options for the space. She wants to keep things simple and uncluttered to keep the spa vibe alive.

Decorate with Pictures and Music

Ola maintained her emphasis on minimalism, but she did reveal a few more design features that bring to mind a relaxing spa setting. She recommends picking wall art with calming colours and focusing on pieces that include pictures of nature to get a natural vibe. She is also quite enthusiastic about employing soothing aromatherapy candles and diffusers.
