Heartworm prevention should be part of general care for both dogs and cats, more so for cats since there is no available heartworm treatment for cats compared to its canine counterpart.

As early as 6-8 weeks old, you should start heartworm prevention in your cat. The dosage will increase as your kitty gets older. Whether your cat is an indoor or outdoor cat, heartworm prevention is still recommended as heartworm infection may be transmitted by mosquitoes. So, even if you think your cat stays mostly indoors, that is not a guarantee that she has immunity. Mosquitoes can get inside the house and your cat may spend some time outdoors, too. Therefore, prevention is key.

To reduce the likelihood of your cat being bitten and infected by mosquitoes, here are some measures you can take:

Have your doors and windows fitted with screens to prevent mosquitoes from entering your house.Change your cat’s water bowls regularly.Remove places that might be breeding grounds for mosquitoes such as stagnant water around the house or in the garden.

Consult your vet Washington DC about the best ways to protect your pet from various health issues.
