Here Is How You Read A Tyre

All of these details can be a bit overwhelming to keep an eye on. Thus, to help you, manufacturers put the details for each of their models of tyres on the sidewall of the tyre itself. That being said, it does require a bit of prior knowledge to understand what the code means. For ease of understanding, let us assume the sidewall of your tyre shows something like 200/60 R 18 87V

200- Section Width

We are starting a bit easy. The first number on your code on the sidewall generally represents the section width of the Pirelli Tyres Reading which in this case is 200mm. The section width represents the width of the tyre.

This is sometimes also referred to as the “cross-section width” in some parts of the world. This is vital information to keep in mind because picking the right size tyre will ensure safety and the best tyre performance. Buying a quality tyre will not guarantee the best performance if the tyre is not made to accommodate the weight and design of your vehicle.  

60- Aspect Ratio

R-Construction

Next is the rim diameter of the tyre. This number is measured in inches and not millimetres like the measurements before it. Rim diameter is the measure of the diameter of the inner rim in inches. This excludes the outer layer of the tyre that would make contact with the road. 

Generally, standard road cars have wheels that are between 14 to 19 inches in diameter. However, luxury cars, sports cars, and SUVs have bigger size wheels than that and thus have bigger rims to support those types of tyres. To pick the right tyre, the size of the rim is very important information to keep in mind.

87V- Load Index and Speed Rating

Finally, at the end of the code, the number represents the load index of the Cheap Tyres Reading and the alphabet represents the speed rating. The load index of a tyre refers to the amount of weight it can carry of the vehicle it supports.

The speed rating of a Mobile Tyre refers to the maximum speed a tyre can be driven at. This is not the speed a vehicle should be driven at. It merely represents the maximum limit the tyres can run at before there is a problem with their performance.
