Institutional Structure

Since the 1800s, EV technology has existed, and the fundamentals of those early electric vehicles are not too dissimilar from what we have now. How do charging stations for electric vehicles function today? Fundamentally, little has altered: A plug is inserted into the vehicle's charging port, and the other end is connected to an electrical outlet — in many cases, the same outlet that powers the home's lighting and appliances. Certainly, decades of technological and engineering advancements have made the process considerably simpler and more efficient.

 

There are three primary categories of chargers based on their respective outputs. Level 1 chargers use the same standard 120 V outlets found in residences and private garages, and can add up to 5 miles of range per hour of charging.
