A lot of passengers stay confused and don’t know the clear answer to how early should I get to the airport? So, keeping that scenario in mind, we decided to write this informative blog and help you out on how early you should arrive at the airport.

Before we begin, there are a few things you should know: the arrival time at the airport differs for domestic and international flights. Depending on your flight, you have to get to the airport accordingly. Furthermore, you must have all the required documents with you before leaving for the airport to avoid last-minute delays.

Domestic flight: How early to arrive at the airport?

If you have a domestic flight from within your home country, you need to arrive at the airport at least 2 hours before departure. For domestic flights, you don’t need much time at the airport before boarding, as it involves fewer formalities in terms of airport check-in and baggage clearance. Here is what you need to consider when it comes to arrival time for domestic flights:

  • You need to be at the airport for check-in at least 30 minutes before your scheduled departure time. In fact, for most airlines, you have the option for online check-in 24 hours before departure.
  • If you are taking checked bags, you need extra time for clearance. So keep that factor in mind, as it involves time to visit the kiosk, tag your luggage, and drop it off.
  • When you are flying domestic you must pass through security with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA). For security reasons, you may be asked to remove certain tiles from your carry-on luggage, so be prepared in advance. Also know that security checks at the airport can sometimes take longer due to long queues or a security fiasco.
  • You can typically board your flight 1 hour before your scheduled departure; this may vary depending on the airline. So even if you reach the airport a bit earlier, you don’t need to worry, and you can board your plane early and relax inside the aircraft.

International flight: How early to arrive at the airport?

For an international flight, you need to get to the airport at least 3 hours before your flight. It is imperative to do so to avoid missing your scheduled flight. For international flights, you need to allow extra time at the airport for several reasons. Here are some of the common explanations:

  • One difference that travelers often notice is that international check-in counters are busier and slower-moving than domestic flights. Why so? Because for international flights, most travelers take more luggage and several more items. Hence, while checking in for an international flight, you may need extra time, so arriving early is advisable.
  • The time you spend at the immigration counter for an international flight can also be uncertain. You never know how long it may take.
  • After clearing the security checks and immigration counter, you will be allowed to board your flight. However, it may also take time, as you need to locate your departure gate number on the airport information screens and on your boarding pass, and then head to the gate.

Conclusion

To give a concluding remark on how early should I get to the airport? The simple answer is that several factors determine your airport arrival time, such as whether you have a domestic or international flight, what type of luggage you are taking, and even which airport your flight is scheduled to depart from.

In general, it is recommended that you arrive at the airport 2 hours before a domestic flight and 3 hours before an international flight. Other than this, make sure you don’t make small mistakes. Always take all your documents with you, recheck all your belongings before moving, and prebook your ride to the airport to avoid last-minute delays.
