How to Read a Supplement Label Without Getting Sold

Most people buying a supplement read three things: the front of the bottle, the price, and the review average. The information that actually determines whether the product does anything is on the back, in small type, written in a format designed to be technically accurate and practically useless.

Here is what to look at, in order.
 

Start with what regulation actually covers

In the United States, supplements fall under DSHEA, passed in 1994. Under it, the FDA does not approve supplements before they reach the shelf. The manufacturer is responsible for the safety of the product and the accuracy of the label, and the FDA acts after the fact if something goes wrong. This is not a conspiracy, it is just the regulatory design, and it changes how you should read the packaging. Nothing on the front of that bottle has been verified by anyone before you picked it up.

Which means the burden of verification moved to you, or to a third party you choose to trust.
 

Proprietary blends hide the doses

If the label lists a "proprietary blend" followed by a single total weight and then a list of ingredients, you cannot know the dose of anything in it. A 2,000 mg blend could be 1,950 mg of the cheapest ingredient and 50 mg spread across the six impressive-sounding ones listed after it. Ingredients appear in descending order by weight, which tells you the ranking and nothing about the gap between positions.

There is no legitimate formulation reason to withhold per-ingredient amounts. The stated reason is protecting the recipe. The practical effect is that the dose cannot be compared against the research.

If the label does not give you per-ingredient milligrams, treat the product as unquantified and move on.
 

Elemental weight is not compound weight

This one costs people the most money. Minerals are bound to a carrier, and the label may show the weight of the whole compound rather than the weight of the mineral itself.

Magnesium is the clearest example. 500 mg of magnesium oxide contains roughly 300 mg of elemental magnesium, but oxide is poorly absorbed, so the amount that reaches you is smaller again. A magnesium glycinate product might show a much larger compound weight for a much smaller elemental dose. The number you want is the elemental amount, and a well-made label states it explicitly. Zinc, iron, and calcium all have the same trap.
 

Third-party certification tests purity, not effect

NSF Certified for Sport, Informed Sport, and USP Verified are the marks worth looking for. What they confirm is that the contents match the label and that the product is free of specified contaminants and banned substances. That matters, particularly for anything imported or anything aimed at athletes.

What they do not confirm is that the ingredient works, or that the dose is the researched one. A certified product with an underdosed active ingredient is a clean, honest, useless product.
 

"Clinically studied" usually refers to a different dose

The phrase is doing a lot of work. There often is a study. The question is whether the study used the dose in the bottle. A branded extract studied at 600 mg per day, included at 100 mg per day in a multi-ingredient formula, still earns the label claim. The claim is about the ingredient's literature, not about this product.

So check the dose against the research, not against the marketing.
 

Then do the cost math

Price per bottle is meaningless because serving sizes vary. Convert to cost per gram of the active ingredient, or cost per serving at the researched dose. Creatine monohydrate is the cleanest illustration: the effective dose is 3 to 5 g per day, monohydrate is the best-studied form, and the price spread across brands selling the same molecule is enormous. Once you are comparing per gram, the premium products often stop looking premium.
 

The habit worth building

Front of the bottle for the claim, back of the bottle for the dose, certification mark for the purity, calculator for the price. Four steps, about ninety seconds.
