Go easy on the soaps
Many people believe that more soap equals cleaner dishes. Over-using soap is a very common mistake that people make and it can ruin your dishwasher. Refer to the dishwasher's instruction manual when you get a new piece. Most companies recommend which type of detergent you should use and will also tell you exactly how much is required for the size of load in the machine.
Test the water
Sometimes the water can be rough on your dishes. Hard water can result in marks and breaks on dishes and affects the machine as well. It's best to test the water to see if using a water softener would help. You can also use a teaspoon of vinegar once in a while during the rinse cycle and this can help reduce the impact of the hard water.
Clean the filter
If the dishwasher isn't draining properly, its filter may be the culprit. If this isn't maintained carefully, the filter retains all the scraps and food particles from the dirty dishes.
