Your washing machine is one of those appliances that are constantly in use, so it is really important to keep it clean. Cleaning a washing machine does seem counter-intuitive and even strange considering soapy water flows through it with each use.

However, using a washing machine is not the same as cleaning it properly. Cleaning your washing machine helps improve the effectiveness of your machine, and these steps on how to clean a washing machine show you how to do it.

First: Clean the exterior

Clean the exterior of your washing machine periodically. Use a natural cleaner like vinegar or a commercial cleaning product suitable for appliances. Make sure to clean around edges of the door and lid to remove any mildew and dirt. Cleaning the exterior of the machine removes any accumulated dirt and dust and gives you a nice-looking machine.

Second: Clean the tub

Pour two cups of lemon juice or vinegar into your washing machine tub. Run the machine through an entire cycle at the hottest water temperature setting. This removes any stains or detergent build-up inside the machine.

Third: Rinse the fabric softener and detergent dispensers

Take the dispensers out of the machine and scrub them in a sink to remove any grime. Leave them out to dry, or leave the washing machine lid open to prevent any mildew from forming.

Fourth: Eliminate substances that leave residue

Commercial fabric softeners leave residue in your machine. Whether you have a top-loading or front loading machine, you can use vinegar as a fabric softener and minimize the number of times that your washing machine needs cleaning.
