Spilling coffee on a valuable rug you just bought is the worst thing! But it can hurt even more f you don’t attend to the stain immediately.

Old, dried coffee stains are a true nightmare that can leave you wondering whether you should just throw the rug out and get a new one. But, of course, that would be too expensive, right? Plus, you don’t want the money you spent on your existing rug go to waste.

So, the best option is to get that stubborn stain out of your rug.

How?

We’d show you!

Removing Stubborn Coffee Stains from Rugs

You may think a coffee spill has scarred your rug for life and you’d never be able to get it out at home. Well, truth is, you can get rid of coffee stains yourself without having to take the rug to a professional cleaner, or replacing it with a new one.

Here’s how to remove a dried coffee from your handmade area rug:

Step 1: Wet the Affected Area

Whether you own a square rug or an oval handmade rug, coffee stains are hard to hide and can ruin the entire look of your décor.

To treat a stain at home, you’d need to first wet the affected area. However, do not wet the complete rug since rugs don’t dry easily and can start smelling bad if left wet.

Step 2: Make A Rug Cleaner

After the spot is wet, it’s time to make your own rug cleaning solution at home.

For this, you can either get a rug shampoo from the market and mix it by following the directions on the bottle, or get some regular dishwashing detergent and mix it in warm water.

Note: The water used for making the solution should be warm, not hot, since hot water can damage your rug.

Step 3: Apply the Cleaning Solution on Stain

It’s time to treat the stain with your cleaning solution. But before that, do a patch test and make sure the cleaner doesn’t cause the rug colors to bleed, fade, or bleach.

If all seems well, apply the solution on the affected area. You may also want to use a soft-bristled brush to rub the spot.

Step 4: Let it sit

When you rub the cleaning solution on the rug, it would form lather. To get the best results, we’d recommend you to let that sit for a few minutes before rinsing.

While treating the stain, remember not to use too much cleaning solution as it can be hard to get out and may cause the rug to become sticky if not rinsed properly.

Step 5: Rinse Well and Dry

Lastly, it’s time to rinse the rug, making sure there’s no rug shampoo left in.

If the stain is still there, you can repeat the process or simply take your rug to a professional rug cleaner.

In any case, always let your Bokhara handmade rug dry completely before taking it back inside because wet or damp rugs can become home to mold, and you don’t want to end up looking for new square rugs on sale.
