How to Introduce New Shooters to an Outdoor Range

Are your friends interested in target shooting but have only ever shot their grandpa’s old hunting rifle? It might be time to introduce them to something more modern, like an MK12 rifle, and invite them to an outdoor range. It can be intimidating for new shooters at first, which is why you need to take your time and follow these steps to help them get acclimated to range shooting.

Are your friends interested in target shooting but haven’t touched a gun in years? It might be time to introduce them to something more modern, like an MK12 rifle, and invite them out to an outdoor range. Some people are naturals at the shooting range, while others need to get acclimated first. Here are a few ways to introduce new shooters to the fun of target practice at an outdoor range.

Go Over the Rules

The first step is to go over the rules. Explain the differences between a hot and cold range, how to wear ear and eye protection, and the four rules of firearms safety. There may be more rules at a range that has actual lanes and a range officer than shooting spots on BLM land. In the latter case, make sure they know to always have a backstop to catch bullets. If there is a Range Safety Officer present, always follow their directions.

Bring a Variety of Options for Your Friends to Try

If your friend doesn’t have a ton of firearms experience, you should expose them to the various rifles and handguns available, so they can see what they like best. You don’t need to bring your whole arsenal, but an AR15, a striker fired 1911, and a bolt action rifle are good starting points. The key is to expose them to a variety of options to see what they like best. Try different calibers if possible. Different shooters often resonate with different firearms, and an outdoor range is an excellent place to try different types of firearms.

Shoot Different Targets

If you want to make their range time more interesting, bring different types of targets to shoot with your AR or PCC 9MM. Paper targets are great for quick transitions; metal targets offer that satisfying “ping” on each hit, and a liter bottle of water adds a bit more excitement. Different targets present different challenges, which can also help them see the fun in target shooting.
