An outdoor range is vastly different from an indoor range. While indoor ranges feature orderly lanes, an outdoor range might be berms or hillsides designated as an area where you can shoot. Get Your Guns Ready
Get all of your guns ready before it’s time to head out. Unlike an indoor range, you might not have a ton of space to tinker around or switch things up. While some outdoor ranges have benches and tables, you shouldn’t always count on it. If you need to install some Glock 19 accessories, now is the time. While you should bring tools just in case you need to take down a firearm to clean it or clear a jam, an outdoor range isn’t the best place to try amateur gunsmithing. Put your firearms in cases or traveling socks, and make sure they are ready to go once you get to the range.
Load Your Ammo Beforehand
Like any range trip, loading ammo beforehand is a good idea. If you’re heading to an outdoor range that might be windy and dusty, it’s an even better idea to load your mags and try to keep them covered. The less dust that gets into your mags and guns, the better. At best, it’s an annoyance you will need to deal with when cleaning your guns after the range trip. At worst, grit between rounds could cause jams and other malfunctions. Plus, it’s so much more fun and productive to spend the range time shooting rather than reloading magazines.
Bring Your Own Targets
At most indoor ranges, all you need to bring is your own paper targets, and many will have paper targets available anyway. At an outdoor range, you’ll likely need to bring everything. Just having paper won’t be enough, as you’ll need a stand to hold your target. However, unlike indoor ranges, you have a bit more freedom in your target selection at outdoor ranges. You can bring self-healing targets that bounce around on every hit for a challenge or liter water bottles filled with colored water to see if you can walk your shots down, letting more water out with each shot. This makes for a more interactive and fun range day.
Be Ready for the Dust
Finally, be ready for the dust. One of the best Glock 43X accessories for outdoor ranges is a grip plug. Glocks have a small opening at the bottom of the grip, and if you don’t have a plug, it’s an invitation for dirt and dust to get into the trigger mechanism. A gritty trigger isn’t anyone’s idea of a good range day. You’ll also want to protect yourself from dust, as well. By the same token, keep your AR 15 dust cover closed when not in use so it can do its job. A bandana or mask to protect you from breathing in dust on windy days is also a good idea. If it’s a particularly dusty day, make sure to clean your guns as soon as you get home.
