Have you ever thought about the amount of information you provide online? Sometimes you can\'t avoid providing your personal information, like when you make an online purchase. However, for those times when it\'s not necessary, it\'s important to think about what you\'re sharing.

Online privacy should not be a cause for alarm. Here\'s what to be aware of so you can practice good online habits. In this way, you can confidently enjoy the benefits that the Internet has to offer.

The security rules that we follow in real life should also be applied in cyberspace. Just like locking your door when you leave your home, it\'s important to protect your personal information online. Here are some steps you can take to help make this happen.

1. Passwords: Make them strong and secure
Weak cyberspace passwords like "Password1" and "12345" take less than a second for hackers to guess. If you want to protect your personal information, start by creating strong and secure passwords for all your online accounts. The longer the password, the harder it is for others to guess.

The best type of password is a combination of numbers, letters and symbols. However, these passwords are also hard to remember. To make things easier, create a crossword for something like a memorable trip or event by using the first letters of the phrase and adding symbols and numbers.

For example, suppose you went to Paris in 2016, you could create a password like: Iw2Pi16! This is much harder to guess. Another option is to use a Password Manager to remember all of your passwords so that you only remember one master password.

2. Don\'t share more information than you need to
Cyberspace, especially social networks like Instagram, are a great way to connect with your community, friends and family. To help protect your privacy online, set your profile to private and only accept friend requests from people you know in real life.

It\'s also a good idea to be mindful of what you post on Facebook. For example, avoid sharing personal information like your date of birth and address, or pictures of your travels while you\'re on vacation.

Avoid using Instagram (or any other social media account) to log into other websites. When you use your Facebook details to log in to other websites, it allows Facebook to share your data with them too, so instead, enter your email address and password to create an account. Use new ones.

3. Check your apps\' permissions
Some apps ask for unnecessary permissions unrelated to their functionality. For example, a weather app doesn\'t need access to your contact list or microphone to check the weather.

You can review the permissions you\'ve given to apps on your smartphone in the Settings menu. Scroll down to see a list of all the apps on your phone, then tap each app to see what you\'ve given permission for and adjust accordingly.

Change permissions in apps to "when using the app" instead of "always". Also, if you no longer use an app, it\'s best to delete it. Learn more about managing and uninstalling apps.

4. Pay for purchases online and securely
The safest way to pay online in cyberspace is through your trusted bank or credit card portals. Banking gateways provide an additional level of protection as they allow you to pay without having to share your bank or credit card details with the online merchant.

When you use the banking portal to pay something, the online merchant will automatically redirect you to the bank\'s site, where you can log in and confirm the payment. PayPal will then quickly redirect you to the online seller to receive your order confirmation details.

Before buying anything online, make sure the website is legit and safe. Before checkout, always look for “https://” (“s” stands for secure) and a closed lock in the address bar.

It is also better to stick to famous websites that have a good reputation. If you\'re unsure about a particular website, check online reviews and look for things like the number of reviews (the more the better) and how recent they are.

5. Be aware of phishing scams
Phishing scams trick people into handing over personal information by pretending to be an organization they know, such as a bank, Internet service provider, or government agency. So read text messages and emails carefully before clicking on any link.
