Human rights are a global phenomenon where every human rights organization is created to focus on specific causes of a community, person, individual or demographic. They cover the human rights of these people that pertain to their religion, economy, and civil, political, and personal liberties.
The process of globalization has connected all human rights groups to intertwine and collaborate to internationalize their causes. The individual that is entitled to their due rights ranges from an infant to the elderly. If they are in a community, then they will be defended according to their ethnic, religious, political, racial, and gender identity.
International NGOs have become instrumental in spearheading these issues and investing their legal and humanitarian aid to people who require it desperately. The rights of people with different sexual orientations and gender identities have also become a focal point of these human rights groups. Many LGBT communities suffer persecution and oppression in other parts of the world due to the religious or authoritarian mechanisms of the countries they reside in.
Unfortunately, many of these communities can only find protection in the West due to their liberal laws. Many countries still opt to discriminate and violate the rights of sexual and gender minorities without pushback from the international community.
The point is not that only a few sets of people have rights and others do not. It is a fact that all people regardless of their background are entitled to civil and legal protections in the international arena. LGBT communities were dismissed as not deserving of rights and any violations against them were considered legal until the intervention of human rights outfits.
Disabled people who are considered the most vulnerable communities suffering from exploitation are also provided with more rights to ensure that they are safeguarded against shady parties trying to harm them. The physically disabled, deaf, and mute people have had their cases defended in the legal system by human rights organizations.
The same is the case for any person who has committed a crime be he a murderer, rapist, or robber. The individual charged with a crime has full rights to remain protected and not be subject to any form of violence or abuse. Criminals in olden times were not provided with any protections as they were viewed as a party that had surrendered all their rights through their crime.
But in the current era, such criminals not only have the right to protect their physical and civil well-being but also fight against the death penalty and lower their sentences. The death penalty is considered extremely controversial in civil society with a majority of activists trying to find solutions to human rights violations by fighting against its installment.
The abortion issue is a controversial issue that has not been met with general agreement among human rights groups. Some consider it a woman’s choice while others consider the unborn baby to be just as important when it comes to its rights. The abortion debate remains a polarizing issue for many human rights outfits trying to expand their idea of human rights worldwide.
