Last week, one of my friends dropped me home from office. We had a very nice chat on the way. She and I were lamenting on a common problem we are facing in life.
Having to lower our standards because there are not many people who measure up to them.
Out of the several areas where we’re compelled to do this, the foremost are :
Using our eloquence & wit to its full potential when conversing.Having to curtail our efforts at excelling in the life skills we’d like to imbibe in ourselves.Having to drop our pursuit of excellence & cater to mediocrity in daily life. The struggle is real!
At the risk of coming across as entitled intellectual snobs, we seek higher standards of living from ourselves & from those we deal with everyday. Is it too much to ask?
Well, people do think it is. Because they think we’re perfectionists.
No! We’re a far cry from that.
For example, only last week I learned that petrichor is pronounced ‘petri-kor’. I had been pronouncing it wrong all my life. That didn’t stop me from using it and other beautiful words in daily life, did it?
I personally have bent so much that I have started oversimplifying even my blog’s language to attract a wider audience. Am I so desperate? No offence to the connoisseurs of simple language though.
Simple, coherent, and compelling write-ups are more difficult to write than elaborate ones.
For example, I read Paulo Coelho’s Alchemist. It made sense to me as long as it was simply narrated, but when it went into the realms of the pseudo-mystical, it was off-putting. Just as my write-up would be to you at this point.
All I want to say is –
If you seek perfection, you’re doomed. If you seek high standards, you deserve them. Never compromise on them. Your relentless pursuit may inspire others to seek them too!
