So, you’ve been thinking of starting an online business. But, fear, self-doubt, and uncertainty are setting in from every angle. You keep asking yourself, “is online business really for me?” Well, this might help you with decision process.
With everyone narrating their experiences, there’s a lot of information out there that could confuse you. And let’s face it – what works for another person might not work for you.
Finally, an End to the Corporate World
Expectation: I know- you fear that it might turn out to be precisely what you’re running from in the corporate world. I mean, monotonous routines, long boring meetings, endless training on sexual harassment and such related issues, boring team building sessions, and the infamous organizational politics, etc. The corporate world can turn out to be a small, annoying, and unsatisfying place.

Reality: When you start being your own boss, you say goodbye to the idea of the corporate grind. Long boring meetings, employee drama, and corporate politics become a thing of the past. Too soon to celebrate, though. You still have a daily routine here – something you have to do repeatedly to keep the business on track. Each business has its own set of routines to keep running—things like responding to client requests, continuous content production, and running social platforms. The success of your business is dependent on YOU. Just that thought is enough to keep you motivated all the way through.
Bottom line: True – enough of the corporate grind. The little remaining aspect of it will be fun, since you’re doing what you love, which results in your business’s success.

Time to Set Your Schedule
Expectation: Let’s face it – we all crave the freedom to work when you want, leave when you want, set goals, and work on them when you want. One reason why many people run from corporate jobs is because of the undying desire to gain the freedom to set your timing. You so badly want to break free from the 9 am to 5 pm or in my case 8-5 pm norm. The thought that you have to devote over 40 plus hours every week working for someone else’s success is demoralizing. The idea that you can break free of this ‘bondage’ is appealing and could entice you to pursue your online business dream.
Reality: Working from home comes with a lot of freedom. You set your working routine and stick to it. You can also make adjustments when you feel like it. You also decide how many hours you work daily. This means you also get extra time to workout, hobbies, side hustles. You also get to hang out with friends and family. You can finally take a day off whenever you feel like, even go on vacation.

Bottom line: Online Business comes with lots of freedom to make adjustments concerning when to work, how many hours to work, and when to take a day off.
Carry Your Office Anywhere, Everywhere
Expectation: You are tired of reporting to the same workstation every day. Just the thought of getting off of your pajamas drains you. You dream of a mobile office you can carry to the beach, your backyard, park, garden, hotel, or coffee shop. The desire to be able to take your workstation to any job location is appealing and quickly pulls you to the online business world.

Reality: Yes- you can work virtually from anywhere. From your home, rented office, hotel, etc – pretty anywhere you’re more productive. The only hassle is in finding a good place without such distractions as noise. If you hate traveling and frequent movement, a centralized working location will serve you just fine.
Bottom line: With online business comes the freedom to virtually work from anywhere.
Choose What Projects to Work On
Expectation: In the corporate world, deciding what to work on at a particular time is not yours. The owner, client, or peers get to make that decision for you. Most of the time, what you think is most important, or what you’re passionate about, doesn’t count.
Reality: In the online business world, you have it all in your hands to decide which work is urgent, relevant, and the effort required for each task. However, if you don’t have a team to help, you’ll probably have a lot of work piled up. You need to keep in mind that you’re obligated to oversee everything and deal with unexpected events and return things to normal. This can be overwhelming.
Bottom line: Working on your online business comes with the feel of being in control. You decide when and how to run things. You even set goals and make decisions on your own. Outsourcing tasks can become one of your greatest ally.

Financial Freedom
Expectation: Many people dive into online business because of the unceasing desire to achieve financial freedom. The corporate world can land you in deep economic crises. Unexpected circumstances like a worldwide pandemic can collapse the company you’re working for and directly affect you. What’s more, you can be fired unexpectedly anytime (this I’ve seen several times during the writing of this post).
Scrambling to find another job to salvage the situation is a hassle especial during unpredictable times. Financial freedom calls for a steady and diversified stream of income, one that gives you total control.
Reality: Many people who quit the corporate world for personal businesses admit it was the right step towards gaining financial freedom. This doesn’t necessarily apply to everyone, though. Some may find it a little rough. While you can control many streams of income for your business, some are entirely out of your control and depend on such things as market trends, tools such as AdSense, Website traffic, etc.
Bottom Line: Being in control of most of your streams of revenue brings the highest level of financial independence.

The Harder You Work, The Higher the Rate of Your Success
Expectation: In the corporate world, your level of effort may not always be related to the results, most of which you never even get to hear of. You expect a different case in an online business. Seeing the results of the efforts encourages you; most of the time, giving you that little push you need to scale higher.

Final Thoughts
Building a successful online business takes time and lots of effort, which eventually bears good fruits – financial independence, flexibility, and freedom. However, choosing the bold step to move from the corporate world to build your online business requires proper planning.
Reality: In Online Business, just like any other business, the level of effort is often directly proportional to the success rate. However, more effort doesn’t always mean spending more time on a project. Instead, it’s all about taking the smart approach for the best results.
Bottom Line: The more effort you put in, the higher your success rate. You just can’t predict when it’s going to happen.
