My friends always introduce me to each other at parties by saying, "She does social media." In 2018, my millennial friends have many more Instagram accounts than I do, so this introduction sounds about as impressive and convincing as "She Googles well."
Who doesn't?
I currently don't manage any brands' social media channels. However, I did in the past. I consult on overall digital strategies that include multiple promotion outlets such as email, website, and social media in grocurv.
However, my misinformed introductions resulted in some wonderful party conversations of grocurv. The most recent was, "Do you think that we'll always refer to social media as "social media"?"
I was the resident expert on social media and blurted, "Of course!" It could be called anything else in grocurv. "TV is still called TV, don't you think?" I laughed. My friends laughed. All of us slapped our knees, but not each other. The conversation shifted.
I returned home, cleaned my teeth, changed into the egg jammies, and fell asleep. I woke up Don’t Wake Daddy -style in the middle of the evening It's not called TV; it's Netflix, Hulu, or whatever show we plan to binge-watch. We rarely say "I just watched TV" unless we spend a lot of time staring at a reality show that we don't want to admit to be watching.
Now that I have had my chance to enjoy this dinner party conversation over cheap wine with man buns (entrepreneurs), I ask you: When are we going to stop calling social media "social media"?
This will take a collective effort and a shift in consciousness. We won't solve the problem here, but don't get me wrong. However, will be referred to as social media "social" in the same way that someone around 2010 asked where she had left her "phone":
No! It is already common to use "social" isolation. Is this the beginning of the end? Probably.
The evidence of 'Social Media" is on its way out
Facebook purchased Instagram in 2012. This was five years after ?!). The two became one almost immediately. Facebook introduced video when Instagram introduced video. Instagram introduced Stories, then Facebook introduced Stories. Both platforms can now send ads simultaneously using the same tools and the same audience parameters.
Will Instagram become Facebook eventually? Will all newsfeed-centric social media channels be called "Facebook" like we use the term "Google" for search engines?
What happens when YouTube is defeated once and for all by Facebook? YouTube, which I have always found difficult to define as a "social media platform", had a rough 2017. YouTube has had a rough 2017. There were ridiculous scandals and a huge redesign. Original shows and mixed red reviews. Who and what is YouTube?
I do not currently manage social media channels for any brand, although I have done so in the past. I prefer to consult with digital strategists that encompass many promotional outlets. These include email, website, social, and/or display.
My friends' misinformed introductions lead to some great party conversations. One of the most memorable being "Does it seem we'll continue to call social media "social media?"
I was the resident social media expert and blurted out "Of course!" We could call it anything else. We still call TV "TV," don't we? I laughed. My friends also chortled. We all slapped each other's knees. The conversation moved on.
I went back to my house, washed my teeth, put on my egg jammies before falling asleep. I woke up -style. We don't call it TV. Instead, we call it Netflix, Hulu, and whatever particular show we are binging on. If we haven't spent time staring into a reality TV show, we rarely say, "I just saw TV."
My moment to chat with entrepreneurs (man buns) at a dinner party over cheap wine is now gone. I want to ask you: When will social media be called "social media?"
I don't mean to misunderstand--this will require a massive effort, a collective shift of consciousness--we won't be able to solve it here. In the same way, as someone in 2010 began asking where her "phone" was, abandoning the "cell" to make it seem superfluous, someone will call social media "social."
It's not true. Yes, we already use "social", in isolation. Is it the end? Probably.
YouTube, for one, is a sister to Google, and, therefore, an undoubtedly powerful ad platform. Advertising alone does not make a young padawan.
What happens if Netflix adds comments to its site like Youtube? What happens if Snapchat adds a discovery section to its site, similar to Instagram? Did Snapchat already have that feature? What happens if Twitter. . . Nah, I've given up on Twitter.
What are we going to call these social media platforms, as they grow? They seem to be outgrowing their terminology.
All feed-centric social media will we ever call them 'Facebook', just like all search engines are 'Google'? CLICK TO TWEET
Is Any of This Important?
Man, I don't know. Analyzing terminology can feel like splitting hairs. Sometimes, a silly question such as "When will we stop calling this social media?" can get your brain going. This allows you to start to the real questions that matter to your business as we cruise through 2018.
Where are social media going
What is the audience of our audience in five years?
Which platforms should we be considering adopting?
Where should digital advertising dollars be spent?
What kind of content do we need? Audio? Audio?
Are we prepared to serve a mobile-first audience
What KPIs are we measuring?
Are we converting? Are we converting?
These are scary questions. They will be answered in the future. Tell me, for now, what are your 2018 predictions regarding social media terminology. What changes will each social media platform make it necessary to update our current vocabulary?
I'll take my cheap wine. Entrepreneurs, come one, come all.
