One might wonder if it’s too early or late to enrol their children or even adults in an Abacus program or whether they would be able to grasp it well. There are many opinions on this.

There is no age bar for learning, but when it comes to Abacus, it’s recommended to start at a very young age to master the speed and mental maths skills.

Prerequisite is to know at least numbers 1 to 100 and the concept of simple addition and subtraction. The recommended age for this program to start this program is between 5 to 14  years.

The human brain development is the most at this stage.

At the age of 5, children have the required hand motor skills to be able to use the abacus with the bead movements.

As children grow older, there is an increase in academic pressure with assignments and tests and hence the concentration is more towards that.

Abacus requires dedicated time to practise regularly to master the technique.

Younger children may initially struggle to understand the concept but once they get the hang of it, they are ones to absorb and retain in their memory the most.

But that doesn’t stop any other age group from learning abacus.

All it requires is a bit more focus and determination to complete it.

Also, there are many advantages and benefits it can provide for adults.

Abacus training can slow down mental degradation or declining cognitive functioning due to old age.

Also, learning to use the Abacus can improve one’s focus and act as a meditative method.

When people grow older, their visualisation and imaginative skills decline. Abacus training can help counter that. It is a valuable skill to have at any age.

There is no age limit to learning Abacus.

It would be best for one to start at an early age to gain mastery and enjoy the full benefits it can offer. But, if one wants to learn it and is willing to put in the effort, age is not an issue.
