This is a criminal case in which police interrogated a juvenile suspect at a schoolhouse without giving him a Miranda warning. The court denied the suppression of his statements and evidence, and he was convicted of breaking and entering, larceny, and possession of stolen property.
The questioning occurred after police learned that a digital camera matching one of the items stolen during the break-ins had been seen in J. D. B.'s possession and that he had been questioned previously about the crimes. A uniformed officer on detail at the school escorted J. D. B. from his classroom to a conference room and questioned him for 30 to 45 minutes, prior to giving him Miranda warnings or the opportunity to speak to his grandmother, his legal guardian. This was the second time that police questioned him about these crimes and he did not feel that he was free to leave until he answered the investigator's questions.
