World-renowned fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld announced the opening of a 270-room branded hotel in the development of the Macau casino operator's Grand Lisboa Palace in partnership with SJM Holdings Limited.

According to a report by The Guardian, the new Chanel-themed hotel will be built in one of the 20-story towers of the $3.9 billion Grand Lisboa Palace, and the 83-year-old also said he is "studying other opportunities to open different properties around the world."

"The whole hotel was designed by me," Hamburg-born Lagerfeld said. "It's the first time for me. I think the idea is great."

The German has previously worked with Monaco's Metropole Hotel and Paris's de Krylon Hotel on exclusive luxury rooms, but the Guardian reported that the Macau venture will involve his company designing the whole look of the hotel. He will follow the example of rivals including Armani, Bulgari, and Versace, who premiered properties under their names, while major fashion houses, from Dior to Diane von Furstenberg, have developed lucrative sidelines that design suites and other hotel interiors.

Lagerfeld serves as chief designer of Chanel and the Fendi fashion house, and has also designed cans for diet cola along with an upcoming hotel within the Grand Lisboa Palace, which will be developed as his brand, Karl Lagerfeld Greater China.

The 2,000-room Grand Lisboa Palace, expected to open in Cotay Street around March next year, will include casinos, restaurants and other hotels, including themes on the Versace fashion label, following an announcement by SJM Holdings Limited in September
