The Untourists The Untourists - Discovering the beautiful world we live in.
When you travel to a forest and want to experience it all around you, generally the choices are limited. Either your stay is very luxurious, without the wild feel, or it’s too wild and the amenities non-existent. Khem Villas in Ranthambhore has managed the best of both the worlds. And that, with an touch of Eco-friendliness.
Almost touching the boundary of the Ranthambhore National Park, Khem Villas is a luxurious place with super comfortable tents or rooms, which ever may be your preference. With enough wild walks inside the compound, you are surely not going to miss the wilderness. Since it is so close to the forest, and thankfully the nature and wildlife friendly management has left more than enough forested area around, you can have your own mini-safari or birding trip right inside the property.
We wake up early mornings to the call of birds, or sambar deer and langurs (if a large predator is around). The naturalists will take you around for a walk and you come back in time for a delicious breakfast. That’s of course if you have chosen not to go for the National Park Safari. Then spend the lazy day lying next to the pool or just gazing at the birds and butterflies. A healthy lunch can be followed with a quick nap and then another safari or walk within the premises. Evenings are best spent next to the pool bar, discussing stories of the wilderness with other guests and star gazing with a spotting scope. Khem Villas is a destination in itself, and sometimes you don’t even miss the National Park Safari.
As your car arrives at Khem Villas, this magnificent drive with a canopy of wild bamboo trigger a feeling of thrill. Often, wild animals, including tigers, are spotted crossing this area.
The lobby area of Khem Villas. Look for the Indian Grey langur basking on the roof top.
The water body by the bar. Sit here all day and watch various birds do their thing all day long.
Meals are served at this dining area. A great place to catch up with other fellow guests.

Individual tents are quite well separated so you have your privacy and enjoy the wilderness.
Another shot of the perch seating. Watch the tall grass below, which attracts a host of munias and parakeets.

Do take time to go into the old old city of Sawai Madhopur. This temple stole our hearts.
This old city has some good views and plenty of great samosas and kachoris to eat.

Where to stay at Ranthambhore National Park: of course, we prefer Khem Villas.
How to reach Khem Villas : To reach Ranthambhore National Park and Khem Villas, the train station and town is called Sawai Madhopur. You can either take a train or come by car. Thankfully there is no airport. It leaves some quaintness in this place intact.
When to visit Khem Villas : Winters (October to February) is the best time. January can be really cold. During the summers, (March-June) the animal sightings increase (because the dry deciduous forests shed their leaves, increasing long distance visibility, and thirsty wildlife can be spotted near water bodies) so it’s a good time too. But it can get very very hot. During the monsoons (July-September), the Ranthambhore National Park is shut. Check with the front desk at Khem Villas if they would still be open. We would recommend visiting in the rains as well, as the weather becomes chilly and the greenery flourishes.
