“The way to stay happy and alive for me is eating whatever I feel like eating”. This is a very random statement that I’ve heard most girls saying around me. As a matter of fact even I’ve said this unconsciously to my partner repeatedly. This is one side of the picture but if we flip it around there are people who say, “I really don’t feel like eating now a days. If I force myself I might throw up”.
All of us have heard or said either of them. How do you look at this? Do you feel that it’s normal?
We live in a world of science and awareness. Our minds are conscious to all sorts of health issues, mental health is one of them. The statements that are mentioned above are two different situations that one might find oneself in. which in turn of mental health shadows on mood eating.
What is mood eating? It is basically the eating that is derived by your mood swings. Some people eat a lot when they are depressed and others might stop eating anything at all. But don’t confuse this with your regular eating habits. Mood eating is the name of two extremes that make you feel sick.
How I explain these two extremes is
Anorexia nervosaBulimia nervosaThese two terms might look simple but they really need attention from the patients end if really suffering from one. Moreover it is not necessary that you are suffering from these symptoms and have this disorder, perhaps there are other reasons you’re expressing on food. Let’s look into these two disorders and try to understand why they are generally termed as mood eating disorders.
Anorexia nervosa:
In easier words it is self-starvation. Anybody suffering from anorexia nervosa has a main symptom that is staying hungry and no eating to an extent that it turns to be life threatening. It is normal for people to be on diet and eating selective food. But this disorder makes you so obsessed with staying hungry that you start starving yourself. There are several patterns in which one might appear to be starving. Some don’t eat for days and some eat so little that it’s equal to nothing. It’s not very complicated but it has many details to it. There are a few types pf anorexia nervosa as well each characterized by a certain patter of starving.
For knowing better about your condition if you are suffering from any such signs. You should see your doctor first hand and save yourself from starving.
Bulimia nervosa:
Anorexia is deprivation and bulimia is excess. This disorder is extra eating. Mostly occurring in females, it is characterized by heavy eating binges. Let me simplify eating binges for you. It means that you don’t eat for days and every once in a month or week you eat heavily for fulfilling your eating desire. This is a more dangerous one where you can end up feeling nauseas that results into throwing up. Basically, you’re not eating regularly and when you are, you throw it up with acids of your stomach.
Other mood eating disorders are not as dangerous but are similar in severity. They might put you to bed for weeks or days. Being unable to eat properly can always turn bad for your own health. If you ever feel like you are feeing week or are unable to eat properly, I’d suggest you go and get yourself checked from a doctor. This way you won’t end up dealing with a disorder in its worst form.
