There are many opportunities for advancement in accounting, which is a fast-growing and in-demand career path. Many candidates discover that certifications are required to climb the ladder of success. There is, however, a need for additional training for this certification because there is a predicted increase in employment for this certification in the near future, thus proving that the certification is worthwhile.

CMAs are professional credentials for financial management and management accounting, and they show that an individual understands financial planning, analysis, control, decision support, and professional ethics. The CMA certification is issued by the Institute of Management Accountants.

The program is considered a global benchmark for management accountants and financial professionals. Candidates typically complete it in 12-18 months. The program consists of two parts: Financial Planning, Performance and Analytics and Strategic Financial Management. There's a reason why the CMA certification process is rigorous, and CMAs have a more broad knowledge base than general accountants, so they're more specialized than general accountants, who often work in tandem with upper management to make key strategic decisions.

The certification of a CMA demonstrates that a professional is proficient in management accounting's most significant practices, and as such, earning the designation is a rigorous process. Here are some of the requirements for achieving the CMA designation:

Take part in IMA's activities:

It is the IMA that administers the CMA exam and being an "active member" means paying a fee and joining its activities.

CMA program enrollment:

By paying the required fee, you can enroll in the CMA Program, which entails writing and grading exams and sending resumes to employers after you complete the program.

Comply with education requirements:

A four-year degree from an accredited college or university is required for CMA candidates. Accredited degrees are accepted from any country, and there is no prior educational requirement.

Having the required experience:

The CMA program requires candidates to have two continuous years of full-time work history or work part-time at least 20 hours a week. It is not required to complete the experience requirement before enrolling. The IMA, however, has specific rules regarding continuing work experience. Therefore, it's imperative to validate which work experiences count toward this requirement within seven years after passing the CMA exam.

Achieve passing scores on both CMA parts:

A total of two exams are offered, which can be taken in any order, with a specific fee for each. Part 1 is focused on financial reporting, planning, performance, and control, and Part 2 is focused on financial decision-making and strategic planning. Failure to pass either part of the CMA exam will result in the applicant having to reapply and must pass both parts within three years.

Keep up-to-date with  your education:

It is mandatory that you complete nearly 30 hours of continuing education each year, including two hours dedicated to ethics. This requirement applies only after a candidate passes both parts of the CMA examination and you must also pay IMA dues and CMA dues each year to maintain your certification.

Conclusion

It's ideal for management accountants to earn a CMA certification, but that doesn't mean it's a winning strategy for everyone. If you're in public accounting or do not wish to advance your career, it may not be a worthwhile investment. However, someone transitioning from public accounting to industry accounting may benefit from obtaining certification.

In order to close the skills gap and create opportunities for advancement within their profession, management accountants should enroll in the CMA program at Mylogic and seek learning support.
