Did you not check your ammo boxes before leaving for the range? While there’s nothing more satisfying than going through a few boxes of ammo in a single range session, sometimes less is more. With a limited supply of ammo, you can focus on your shooting fundamentals, improving your accuracy and making you a more well-rounded marksman. Here are a few drills to try with your Glock and favorite Glock accessories.
The One-Round Drill
Shooting a single round is easy, right? The point of this drill isn’t just shooting one round; it’s to build muscle memory and consistency.
You can start low or high ready or with your Glock in a holster. On the buzzer, present your Glock and fire a round at the target. Regain your sight picture, return to your ready position, or holster your Glock. Repeat the drill nine more times. The point is to build muscle memory by bringing your handgun to bear, aiming, and squeezing the trigger. It can also help you master unholstering your Glock.
Two Rounds with a Reload
This next drill focuses on your reloading fundamentals. Take two mags and load one round in each. Assume the same starting position as the previous drill. On the buzzer, shoot your handgun, causing the slide to lock back on the empty mag. Reload, slingshot your upgraded Glock 43x slide and fire the second round. Return to your ready position.
This drill helps build reloading muscle memory, from dropping a mag to loading a new one and releasing the slide. Focus on smoothness and intentional movement, and you’ll soon become lightning-fast.
Three Rounds with a Reload
Keep your progression up with a drill that builds on the previous two. You want two mags, the first with two rounds and the second with only one loaded.
At the buzzer, shoot two rounds, locking the slide back. Reload, hit the slide lock, and shoot the final round. The goal of this drill is to get the first two rounds in the same spot. This works your target reacquisition and firing speed. Much like the previous drill, this works your reloading skills and helps build muscle memory. It’s especially helpful if you have installed some upgraded Glock accessories, like extended slide and mag releases, which are easier to hit than the stock parts.
Put It All Together with Multiple Targets
The ultimate test is a culmination of everything from the other drills. On the buzzer, aim at the first target and fire two shots, with a goal of consistent placement. Then, reload and shoot the next three rounds.
You have two options for this drill. First, train your target placement and reacquisition after reloading with the ragged hole method. This means trying to make one, single hole in the target, where you hopefully placed your first two shots. Your other option is hitting three different targets, one with each round. This helps further develop your target acquisition and speed.
