Travellers and backpackers sometimes need to lay down their bags and finding a good agriculture job between travels is the perfect way to do this.
Everyone always talks about their amazing travels. I found that Tasmania agriculture jobs were actually what kept me going through my travels in Australia. Travelling around the country is so much fun. I had come from England, had a backpack on my back, had a list of all the youth hostels around the country, and was having an amazing time. I met people from all around the world, I saw some incredible sights and I ate a lot of extraordinary food. I also spend a lot of money! At one point when I was considering a waiter job, which was quite hard to come by, a friend recommended I try an agricultural job. And wow, that set me on a whole new path.
Working between travels
Travelling is great fun but apart from running out of money it can also get exhausting. Laying down your hat and your bag for a few months at a time by getting agriculture jobs is an excellent way of stopping to breathe for a while, albeit working at the same time, and making some good hard earned cash. The agriculture jobs in Tasmania are fantastic for people who just want to work for a few weeks or a few months. The jobs are temporary and the jobs are seasonal. The farmers are happy to employ anyone, local or foreign, so long as they are prepared to work. I landed up doing various jobs, including digging up potatoes, plucking oranges off trees, picking tomatoes and beans, and also, driving a tractor and packing fruit and vegetables. The work is varied and does not require any specific skill, just a love for the outdoors and the ability to work hard.
Farm jobs are social
Believe it or not, I met just as many people working on a Tasmanian farm as I did staying at the various backpackers hostels around the country. Farm work and farm labourers are seasonal. People come and go, just like at a youth hostel. Because the farms employ people from all around the world, it does not matter what passport you are on, you get to work with and to meet interesting people. I would work hard in the day, chatting while I dug up the potatoes feeling the hot sun on my back, then enjoy a drink in the evening chatting to people from South Africa, America, France, Thailand and more. It was social, it was wonderful, it was great to be in one place for a while, and I made money too.
Applying for a farm job
The other thing that surprised me was how easy it was to get a farm job. The farmers list their jobs on an online site or platform. A person would go on to the site, easily see what jobs are available and where, and apply online. It is a super easy process and if I had to get or need Tasmania agriculture jobs again, I would definitely do it.
