Make Your Nervous System a Friend

Our nervous system is designed to keep us alive. When we encounter something threatening or stressful in a healthy, regulated nervous system, our body physiologically responds by activating our protection system (also known as fight or flight). Our heart rate rises, our breathing becomes shallow and short, our eyes dilate to scan for danger, digestion stops, our muscles tense, blood rushes to our arms and legs, and our body is flooded with a cascade of stress hormones designed to mobilize us in the face of danger.

These natural bodily responses are intended to be transient. Once the threat has passed, our nervous system should return to a more balanced, downregulated state. In a traumatized body, however, this natural oscillation between activation and rest can be disrupted, leaving us in a state of constant hypervigilance, anxiety, and distress. We can become stuck in protective patterns of freeze, immobilization, and dissociation in addition to mobilized patterns of fight or flight.

Traumatized bodies work tirelessly to protect us from threat (real or perceived), and what was designed as a temporary response can become a permanent state of being. Chronic fatigue, pain and muscle tension, fibromyalgia, digestive issues, depression, anxiety, memory impairment, sleep issues, weight gain, and other health consequences can result from living in a traumatized body.

Connection patterns that are required for us to thrive as humans and relational beings can also shut down, resulting in isolation, disconnection from social support systems, and ruptured relationships.

While there are numerous approaches to healing, we have found that methods that address the body, where trauma is physically stored, are the most effective. We can access re-embodiment and re-connection and begin to disarm adaptive patterns of protection that have kept us stuck when we understand trauma as both psychological and physiological.
