Experts Sound Alarm As Mountains Of Trash Pile Up On The K2

Who is to blame for the piles of garbage up on the k2, and what is being done to clean up the mess on the mountain? Who is to blame tourists, visitors, hill people, or climbers? Read the news further and decide who has done this act. We all know that the K2 is one of the most popular sites for mountaineers from across the globe.

A team from the central Karakoram National Park waited for all the climbers to descend before climbing up to retrieve most of the garbage from the camps. This is pathetic plastic waste left on the world's second high peak.

Pak Observer news website in Pakistan covers all the incidents and events. As per the report, the mountain is overcrowded and full of trash, called the world's highest garbage dump.

Another important thing here is that the trash is visually unappealing. Climbers come to the mountain and get angry, frustrated, and sad because it is a mountain and the garbage make spoils nature.

Sarah Strattan, the visitor and a US-based mountaineer, said the trash created many problems for climbers and visitors, especially regarding sanitation. We try to melt the snow for water in all camps, and once the snow is dirty, it can make us sick. The situation became so critical for many people Wajid said the trash, especially the ropes, was quite dangerous for visitors and often resulted in severe injuries. He also explained that there were so many ropes if you fell, you will be stuck between them.

K2 Clean Up Expedition

Most trash was found in the mountain in camps 1, 2, and 3. When you reach there, it is the smell that hits unexpectedly. The garbage up on the hill looks fresh, as it seems like someone discarded it seconds ago. The mountaineer also said that the amount of trash piled up there couldn't be gotten up in a day or by a handful of people. It would need another shift to clean up the mountain.

Department Charges a Fee of 43,430PKR.

The department charges a fee of $200, approximately Rs43,430PKR, from every mountaineer for collecting garbage after they use it. The amount is later used for such cleanup drives. This is helpful, but he regretted that the climbers and visitors didn't follow these guidelines and instructions despite all these measures. They left the heap of trash for someone else to dispose of.

Sajid explains that As much as we try, people need to understand that sending people up to these high altitudes is not an easy task. Most local visitors are unwilling to go up to camp 4, and those who climb up face climate change troubles.

As the number of people summiting K2 each year increases, it is essential to understand that the solution does not just lie in cleaning but also not littering. According to Haider Raza, regional head of Gilgit Baltistan, all the 8,000m peaks in Pakistan produce between 15 to 20 tonnes of solid waste annually, of which 86pc is generated from the K2. This figure includes non-burnable waste such as plastic bottles, tins and glasses that, amount to 45pc. At the same time, the remaining is burnable waste such as plastic, paper, and bags. The people of Pakistan are making the country dirty with their own hands.

We know that k2 is a beautiful mountain on earth; it must be respected. We at Pakistan Observer cover the latest news, including Pakistan sports news, lifestyle, health, and technology.
