My First Trek as a Porter
There's a first time for everything. For me, it was when I tied my boots, picked up a backpack, and embarked on my first trek as a porter on the Langtang Valley Trek. What began as a job quickly progressed to be one of the most incredible experiences of my life.

How It Happened
I come from a small village in Nepal, where the mountains are not just part of landscape, but also are part of our life experiences. I grew up seeing porters and trekkers move through the village, and their stories excited me. I always wanted to be part of that world.
One day, one of the trekking companies needed one more porter to go to Langtang. I had no experience, but lots of spirit. I said yes.
Meeting everyone
We started from Syabrubesi, the starting point of the trek. The group was friendly, and each travelled from a different country. I was a little nervous at first yes, and wondered if I would keep up. My new trekking team welcomed me with their friendly smiles, and they were warm and accepting of me. Our guide also offered me wise advice and wise choices, which all together made me feel like I belonged.
The First Steps
Carrying 25 kilos was very hard. The trail to Lama Hotel was steep and the weather was hot. My legs hurt, my shoulders were sore, but I didn’t give up.

As we walked deeper into the valley, I got stronger. I learned to take steady steps, breathe properly, and respect the mountain.
A Magical Place
Reaching Langtang village was an emotional moment. The wide valleys, tall snowy peaks, and peaceful silence made me feel something deep inside. I saw Langtang Lirung (7,227m) shining in the distance.
Everyone was tired but happy. I felt proud — not just for reaching there, but for being part of the journey.
Lessons from the Himalayas
At Kyanjin Gompa, our final stop, I sat with the trekkers, drinking tea as the sun set over the mountains. They asked me about my life, my village, and my dreams.
That’s when I realized — being a porter isn’t just carrying bags. It’s about sharing stories, building friendships, and connecting people with the mountains.
What Langtang Gave Me
This trek gave me more than a paycheck. It gave me:
Confidence to dream of becoming a guide
Respect for all who walk these trails
Friends I may never forget
Love and gratitude for my homeland
Final Thoughts
Your first trek will always be special. Mine taught me to stay strong and keep going — even when the road gets hard. Langtang Valley will always be close to my heart, not because it was easy, but because it was real.
