My Two Cents: Name Change

Am I going to start a petition to make them change the name back? Nope. I do think this is rather stupid. So now this author who should be celebrated as a product of her time including the part where women authors weren't so common she's now labeled a racist. Why is it so hard for people to read a book without applying reality to it? It is fiction. It was written during a different time.

Sure this seems innocent enough. Let's change the name and pretty much ruin a woman's reputation. Sure she's dead but because of this there will be people who won't read or won't allow their kids to read this book. Are you suggesting that people can't read this book and realize that things have improved and that things weren't always the same as they are now? That seems more like a teachable moment that is sneaky.

The word problematic has become meaningless at this point because it always gets tossed around. The woman was writing about the times. People didn't think the same way as they do now. That doesn't mean you can't enjoy the story. Next thing you know books will be changed in order to protect people. Oops that's already happening. Are all books written during certain time periods going to get cleansed so no one is offended? Frankly there are people who hunt for things to be offended about but oops I forgot that I am not allowed to give an opinion because I'm not a person of color. Yep I'm a person of no color even though I'm not transparent. Nope I can't see through my arm so I hate to break it to you ridiculous people but I am a person of color because human beings are all people of color.

It is so weird when taking a survey and you inevitably get asked what race you are when they should be asking what ethnicity you are since we are all human unless you're an alien hiding among us. Who knows? Maybe they are. One strange thing I discovered when I started reading Sweet Valley High books was the part where newer editions have been changed. One small thing happens and things tend to snowball so this renaming and removing statues is just one step into what is sure to turn into a shit show. Why can't we just look at the past and see how far we have come as people? Sure there's a long way to go but why hide it? For some insane reason the name of the band in the Sweet Valley High books changed. It was Droids. Why did it change? I think they might have added cellphones. The ebooks have the original books but the books that are newer have changes. I wouldn't be surprised if that happens to classics. Let's remove the N word from this book even though at the time it was fine to say it. Aren't we smart enough to realize that this is an ugly word? It just comes off as people thinking people are too stupid to realize that fiction and reality are two different things.

Fiction doesn't have to be tied up in a neat bow. It doesn't have to teach a lesson but sometimes it does. I was thinking about reading the Little House books because I read them when I was about six. A child isn't going to read a book and look for racist things. What's wrong with a kid asking about the scene where this or that happens? Can't it be used as a moment to explain that things weren't always the way they are? Does everyone need to be protected? What's next? Will people start pretending that the holocaust never existed? Ugly periods in time existed. There's no denying that. The hope is that we do better and not repeat them but the way things are now it seems like we are going backwards instead of forwards since it's like people are trying to overcompensate. I don't really go on Goodreads much because it can be a very toxic place but I noticed an Asian person complaining because a certain author said she wasn't a person of color. Uh yes you are since we all are.

I would be offended if someone thought they could just pair up everyone under one term while throwing the people of no color on the other side. That just seems like a way to divide people us evil white people against people of color. But I'm on the ridiculous side of things so I decided to use the ridiculous person of no color. It is always so strange when I'm watching a video where the person is talking and they say person of color. Do they actually think about what they are saying? Don't they realize how horrible it is because it just pits people against people like only mentioning shootings when it fits a certain scenario/ Is the world perfect? No of course not. It is far from it but you can't deny that things are so much better now. Are there a lot of fucked up things happening? Yes of course there are since as long as there are humans that's going to happen. I am agreeing with Giles about the world being doomed unless people start thinking things through instead of always yelling out the R word when it isn't always about skin color. Look at the big picture instead of a narrow view. No pun intended but things aren't always black and white. Original link
