Mystic Seaport Museum
My parents first took me to the Mystic Seaport Museum when I was around 8 or 9 years old. It was Camelot. A seaside town where white sails blared in the breeze. In 2014, in my beginnings as a writer on staff at Connecticut Magazine, I started writing about the 38th trip of the Charles W. Morgan, the oldest wooden ship in the world, which the museum set out in the summer of 2014 as the only time it had been in over 90 years. Every time I've been there, whether as a child or during my work I've come away impressed and with a deeper knowledge of the maritime past. The museum was closed in March. shut down temporarily, but the museum reopened its outdoor areas in May. The employees are covered with a 6 foot social distancing is required and the indoor exhibits that include the museum's vessels from the past are now closed. In this COVID-19-adjusted form, I can't wait to return.
Ridgefield
Ridgefield isn't a huge town, but it packs an enormous punch of the way of amenities and charm that range from culture and arts to a myriad of exquisite restaurants and shops. I love drinking a cup of hot chocolate while strolling along Main Street during the town's annual Holiday Stroll in December. It's like an idyllic winter scene.
A lover of art, I like spending time in the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum, with indoor exhibits and sculpture gardens on two acres. To discover the place where Impressionist master Julian Alden Weir and many of his associates were inspired by, I make time to go to The Weir Farm National Historic Site that lies on the Ridgefield-Wilton boundary. Walking around the farm there is awe-inspiring. I also make an effort to take part in a performance a few times per time in A Contemporary Theatre (ACT) located in Connecticut which is an Equity-union theater which presents Broadway-quality shows here.
Hill-Stead Museum, Farmington
Every time I visit at the Hill-Stead Museum I feel as that I've been transported back in time. And that is exactly what its founder, Theodate Pope Riddle, was hoping to achieve. The first woman architect in America was the architect who built her masterpiece of the Colonial Revival as a retirement house of her parents back in the year 1901. Then, it was turned into an art museum, with the condition the "the house and all its contents remain intact." Therefore, when I visit an excursion led by a docent, it's as if I'm an intruder in the Vatican's home, looking back into time. I learn something new every time since each tour is completely unscripted and is geared to your interests and the age of the participant (including for kids).
Her dad Alfred was an admirer of art and amassed a collection European and American artwork that included Mary Cassatt, Edgar Degas, James McNeill Whistler and several Monets by Claude. The colors, fabrics as well as the design and positioning of furniture in each of the rooms were carefully chosen to match the art pieces. The rooms are works of art too. I could stare on Monet's Grainstacks for long periods of time. The subtlety of the colors and light is stunning.
