Preparing Oatmeal The Baby Style

Oats are healthy, gluten free and easily digestible. This makes them the ideal food for babies who have just begun taking solids. They are rich in fiber and a good source of important vitamins, minerals and antioxidants. But even babies can get bored with the same old oatmeal every day! So give the good old oatmeal some flavoured spin with these yummy oats recipes for babies over six months. Here are some recipes you can try:        

Porridge With Apple, Pear And Apricot              

This porridge recipe is highly recommended for babies due to its rich nutritional value. It includes the goodness of fruits, milk and grains. And babies switching to solids will warm up to its delicious taste.

Ingredients:                                                                                               

15g porridge oats (3 tbsp)150ml milk1 apple (peeled, cored, and chopped)1 ripe pear (peeled, cored, and chopped)4 ready-to-eat dried apricots, chopped 4 tbsp water                         

Method:  

Put water and the fruits in a pan. Cover and cook them until the fruits become tender.Mix porridge oats and milk in a small saucepan. Bring the mixture to boil and lower the flame.Keep stirring for a few minutes.         Mix the fruit and the porridge in a bowl and blend them together. Serve when warm.

Banana Oats Smoothie

This one makes for a power-packed health drink for your little one and a delicious recipe for their evolving taste buds.     

Ingredients:

¼ cup oats1 ripe bananaFew flax seeds¼ cup curd    

Method:

Blend the banana, oats, curd and flax seeds together in a blender.You can serve immediately or refrigerate it for a short while before serving.

Oats Khichdi

Oats khichdi is very nutritious for babies: it’s easy to prepare and not to mention yummy! But do not add salt in preparations (like oat cereals) of oats for babies under one year. You may add a spoon of ghee for older babies to increase their caloric intake. You can cook the khichdi in a pressure cooker so that it gets well cooked in a short while.

Ingredients:

1/4 cup quick cooking oats1 tablespoon finely chopped onion2 tablespoon finely chopped tomato2 tablespoon grated carrot2 tablespoon fresh green peas1 garlic cloves , minced or chopped1/4 teaspoon cumin seedsPinch of turmeric powder2 teaspoon gheeSalt to taste (only for babies over 1 year)

Method:

1. Heat a sauce pan and add ghee. Crackle cumin seeds on the ghee as it heats up.

2. Now add garlic and finely chopped onion. Saute for a while.

3. Add all the vegetables and stir fry.

4. Add salt (optional, only for babies over 1 year), turmeric powder and stir. Cover and cook these ingredients for 2-3 minutes.           

5. Add 2 cups of water and let the ingredients boil.

6. Now add the oats and mix them well thoroughly so that there are no lumps.

7. Simmer and cover the pan. Let the khichdi cook for 2-3 minutes. Mix well and turn off the flame.

8. Mash the veggies well with the back of a spoon. Serve the khichdi warm.
