PRINCE2 Concept: Continued Business Justification

PRINCE2 is a structured approach of managing project. It is a compilation of best practices captured from various projects across the industry contributed by countless project managers, sponsors, trainers and consultants.

There are 7 Principles which are foundation of any PRINCE2 project. Continued Business Justification is of the Principle upon which PRINCE2 project majorly rely upon. Any project who is not complying all these Principles cannot be considered as PRINCE2 project.

Very first principle is Continued Business Justifications which means that a project must be aligned to the business objectives of the customer organization. This principle guides organization from starting or continuing projects that is viable in terms of business or corporate strategy.

Identification of business viability is done through an acceptable Business Case. Business Case is the most important of all the management products because it explains the reason of doing the project, expected benefits that the project will realize, includes the cost tolerance (project cost and operational cost) and timescale tolerance ( time period over the projects expected benefits shall be realized by using the project's product). It also covers all the risks associated with the project vis-à-vis key performance indicators.

Business Case is derived from Project Mandate to Project Brief to Outline Business and finally refined as a Business Case at the initiation stage or the project. This document is a live document which has to be updated at the end of each stage to reveal the updated status of key indicators (time, cost, benefits and risks). Business case is referred at each management stages to justify the business viability.

In PRINCE2, Business Justification is the trigger point of initiating any project and form a series of ongoing investment decisions. Viability of a project is determined on the basis of Business case and remains the check point of project sustainability
