Singapore aims to establish a clean mobility ecosystem with a transition from internal combustion engine vehicles to electric vehicles. From 2025, no new diesel cars and taxi registrations will happen. By 20240, all vehicles will run on cleaner energy. To increase the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), Singapore plans to deploy about 60,000 charging points by the end of the decade. More than 10 percent of all new car registrations in 2022 so far have been for electric cars – almost triple of 2021. What else is Singapore doing to encourage the adoption of EVs?

  1. Singapore has introduced the EV Early Adoption Incentive, which provides a rebate off the Additional Registration Fees (ARF). There has also been a revision to the road tax framework in support of electric vehicles.
  2. The Land Transport Authority has also launched the Electric Vehicle Common Charger Grant to encourage the installation of Electric Vehicle charges in non-landed private residences.
  3. The Land Transport Authority (LTA) is working with industry partners to build a high-powered charging network for high-mileage drivers like taxis, commercial fleets, and heavy goods vehicles.
  4. Under a new Bill passed in parliament in November 2022, new developments must be able to support future EV charging needs.
  5. Transport operator, SMRT Corporation’s Strides Mobility has partnered with DST, China’s biggest digital platform for commercial electric vehicles, to launch EVCo – a joint-venture company to market, distribute, lease, and operate commercial electric vehicles (CEVs) in Singapore, Southeast Asia, New Zealand, and Australia.
  6. With LTA’s support, SMRT has increased its fleet of electric buses to 17, along with the addition of 11 Linkker buses in August 2021. These buses are charged with fast overhead pantograph chargers at SMRT Commenting on the sustainability efforts, SMRT CEO, Ngien Hoon Ping, said: “In our 35 years of public transport service, we have had our ups and downs. Through them, we have learnt that we need to work together – across government, regulators, public transport operators, suppliers, partners, and the communities we serve. When we work together, the good we achieve is not just for ourselves now, but also for the generations that come after us.”
  7. Registrations for new zero-emission vehicles so far this year, including EVs and hybrids, have nearly tripled from last year, accounting for more than one out of ten new vehicle registrations.
  8. Additionally, the government has launched campaigns to raise awareness for EVs including “Power EVery Move.”
  9. Singapore is looking to cut transport emissions by 80 percent by 2050 and to achieve this, EV adoption will play a greater role.

Conclusion

EV is the next evolution of the car, and the shift to electric vehicles is necessary because it's also beneficial for the environment. There is a growing number of EV converts in Singapore who are drawn to the new vehicles due to the lower environmental impact and financial costs. Seeing the efforts by Singapore, it seems the country can lead the world in EV technology transfer and the building of renewable energy infrastructure.
