Illegal firearms remain a significant threat to public safety in India and globally. An estimated 1 billion firearms are in circulation worldwide, with around 85% of these firearms in civilian hands. Small arms and light weapons are responsible for an estimated 500,000 deaths each year.

In India, recent data shows that from 2021 to March 2023, the Madhya Pradesh Police filed 28,231 FIRs for illegal firearms.

Indore  Urban  district reported  the  highest number of FIRs, with 4,167 cases, followed by Jabalpur and Dhar districts with 2,227 and 1,683 cases, respectively. It is essential that citizens play their part in this fight against illegal firearms by reporting any suspicious activity to the authorities.

During this period, the Madhya Pradesh  Police seized an impressive 33,251 illegal arms from 33,657 accused across 58 districts, both inside and outside the state. The police force's efforts to curb the proliferation of illegal firearms are noteworthy, but it is vital that citizens also remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police.

Of particular concern is the fact that 0.5% of the accused had international citizenship, with 75% of them belonging to Nigeria. This highlights the need for international cooperation to combat the illicit arms trade, which is a global problem.

The Madhya Pradesh Police's efforts to curb the proliferation of illegal firearms have undoubtedly made the state a safer place, and we should continue to support their work. Globally, firearm-related homicides are a significant issue, with approximately  43,000 people killed by firearms in 2020 in Brazil alone. In El Salvador, approximately 60% of homicides are committed with firearms. The uncontrolled circulation of illegal firearms can lead to crime, violence, and instability, posing a significant threat to public safety globally.

As citizens, we must also remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the authorities to create a more secure society. In conclusion, the Madhya Pradesh Police have set an exemplary standard in their fight against illegal firearms. Their efforts have resulted in safer communities, enhanced public safety, and strengthened law enforcement. Let us continue to support their work and work together to end this threat to public safety.
