Design:
In the ocean of 6-inch cell phones, the Xperia XZ2 Compact is very small, which is an important part of its charm. The back is a comfortable, curved plastic, which still has a high-quality finish due to its matt surface. The Moss Green model I tested was more like a soft, blue-green color with a slightly golden hue and some light. Compared to the 6-inch glass plate, which dominated the market in recent years, the phone feels more comfortable, at least for a small hand. Compact is actually suitable for my jeans pocket, that's a small miracle.
Every time I take Compact, it reminds me of my first iPhone, the 3GS. Compared to the 3.5-inch screen of the 3GS, Sony's latest device display is larger, while the new phone no longer uses the home button, so the screen can be closer to the device's chin. But the curved plastic back and the cell phone fit remind me of the funny moments of the smartphone; No two devices look the same, everyone feels like an expression of your personality, not a handy device on your hips.
Display:
Sony did not try to break the mold with the XZ2 compact display, but the company did not follow that trend. There are no gaps on the screen. Sony is one of the few smartphone manufacturers who still stick their logo on the lower bezel, I cannot use it, but at least it's not too embarrassing. The phone's 18: 9 aspect ratio makes playing and watching video a great experience, even on smaller 5 "displays. Compact has the same LCD panel as the larger XZ2, which does not have to be written home. It covers 160.2% of the sRGB color gamut and achieves a Delta E value of 0.32. The iPhone 8 with a 4.7-inch LCD panel occupies 119.6% of the gamut and has a color accuracy of 0.89.
In terms of brightness, Compact reaches exactly 520 nits on our light meter, in line with the phone's LCD-based brother XZ2. But in general, OLED panels are simply better: the black level is perfect, you will see a wider range of tones, some of which are brighter than the LCD panel, and its brightness used to be the main selling point. From the 6-inch display (even a 5.5-inch display of the iPhone 7 Plus) to the 5-inch display, this is a challenge. Video games are not so compelling when Queen Beyoncé and her husband Jay-Z take over the Louvre in their amazing music videos, which is not as great as on a larger screen.
Camera: Very decent, although the selfie has to work:
Compact has the same camera system as the larger XZ2, with all the advantages and disadvantages that these lenses offer. I compared the Compact to the OnePlus 6 phone for the same price to see which mid-range phone can give you better pictures. Although OnePlus uses a dual lens system, Compact is still overwhelming. XZ2 does not give you portrait mode, but you get richer, clearer and more realistic photos.
Both cameras work better during the day. The yellow lilies are caught side by side in my garden, and the XZ2 brings the tallest stems into focus, and the green leaves around the leaves are richer than the OnePlus lenses. Both cameras are not good at self-portraits, but the OnePlus front lens makes my face look blue. The XZ2's 5 megapixel shooter game was not impressive, but the evening light through the windows of my office was more accurate in this setting.
Like other Sony phones, Compact has a special button when you open the camera app when you press the phone for a long time to unlock it. Although not absolutely necessary, dedicated camera buttons are more useful than the AI Assistant buttons we may never use.
Performance: Snapdragon wins again:
Sony uses the same state-of-the-art Snapdragon 845 processor as the XZ2 Compact in the XZ2 Compact, making the Compact comparable to some of the best android devices on the market today. Combined with 4GB of memory, the XZ2 Compact makes it easy to run multiple applications and switch between them. Playing PUBG Mobile is a breeze, even if I accidentally jumped into the river; I had to go crazy to the coast. When I bought weapons in an abandoned house and tried to figure out who shot me, I found that the XZ2 Compact is not as uncomfortable as other phones when playing this graphics-intensive game.
In the Geekbench 4 test of the system's overall performance, Compact's 8485 rating can easily be compared to Sony's flagship XZ2 (8,449). The company is one year ahead of Google Pixel 2 and our benchmark score is 6,282 points, due to the older Snapdragon 835 processor. The $ 579 OnePlus 6 with 8GB of RAM scored 9,098 points on Geekbench. In 3DMark's Sling Shot Extreme graphics benchmark, Compact broke the larger XZ2 on the tested OpenGL ES 3.1 with 4,699 and 4,672 points. It cannot be compared to the cheap OnePlus 6, which reached 5,124.
