The Rijksmuseum is the most famous museum in Amsterdam and one of the most important art museums in the world. It was founded in 1800 to house paintings collected by Dutch national leader Johan Rudolph Thoré van Cuylenburg. The collection was initially known as the collection of "Amsterdam." Still, when it was founded, the collection had only forty paintings out of a hundred collected. These paintings were all Italian, mainly by Giorgione, Titian, and Tintoretto. Later François Bonvin became the official owner and added more paintings to this collection.
The museum is built on an island in the river Amstel in the city center of Amsterdam. The museum has a collection of over 2000 paintings by Dutch masters. The museum also has a room that exhibits work by Dutch artists in the 19th century. The best thing about this museum is that it houses most of the famous works of Rembrandt, such as "The Night Watch," "The Jewish Bride," and many landscapes.
Other famous painters like Anthony van Dyck, Jacob van Ruisdael, Johannes Vermeer and Jan Steen have works in this museum too.
The museum has a beautiful main building called the "Museumkwartier," which is situated on the Museumplein and houses great works of impressionists and other European artists, a free entrance area with sculptures, an exhibition of work by Jan Toorop, and a gallery of modern art. This building was designed by Dutch architect Pierre Cuypers.
The Rijksmuseum also showcases Amsterdam School paintings at another location in Amsterdam. The museum also offers guided tours, workshops for kids, and outreach activities.
