Furniture upholstery material
Velour, silk, wool and suede are all whimsical upholstery materials. Due to water solutions, they can shrink, lose colour, appearance, and in the worst case, irrevocably deteriorate. Leather upholstery, on the contrary, reacts well to a wet cloth. And such material as flock requires that after cleaning it smoothed lint. As you can see, there are many nuances.
Therefore, rule # 1 ― before cleaning any upholstered furniture-determine the upholstery material and acceptable cleaning methods. Look for this information in the documents that were sent when buying furniture or in the online store in the characteristics. See examples of upholstery below.
When everything is clear with the material, go to rule #2 ― the effect of any tool should be tested. Choose an inconspicuous area on the sofas (for example, the back) and test the product on a small piece. After a while, evaluate the reaction.
Important: First, we determine the upholstery material, then choose the cleaning agent, then test it on the material and only after that we clean the furniture.
Method of applying the product
The way you apply the product to the stain affects the result more than the chosen product.
Rule # 1-clean the spot from its edge to the centre. This way the spot won't stretch. If the stain is large, then treat the surface from seam to seam so that there are no streaks left. For example, the entire seat of the sofas or the entire back if there is a stain on it.
Rule # 2-clean without pressure. Otherwise, along with the stain, there will also be a trace from the rubbed pile. It is enough to leave the product on the spot or apply the product with indenting movements.
Rule # 3-use soft-pile sponges or brushes.
Important: Clean the white sofas with a white sponge/brush/cloth. Coloured ones fade under the influence of cleaning agents and leave traces on the furniture.
Water for cleaning upholstered furniture
Almost all formulations of homemade furniture cleaning solutions contain water. Even if the upholstery is not afraid of moisture, excess liquid penetrates inside, forming mould and mildew. Therefore, before applying the solution to the upholstery, squeeze the sponge well. Another way not to overdo it with water is to use a spray bottle. It will evenly distribute the solution and will not spoil the furniture.
ADVICE: If you overdo it with water, dry the wet areas with a hairdryer. Remember that velour should not be blow-dried.
Ways to clean upholstered furniture from dust at home
These cleaning methods are suitable ― if you just need to refresh the sofas. Remove dust, crumbs, etc. With serious dirt, dry and wet cleaning of the furniture will not cope.
Dry vacuuming
Put a special furniture cleaning nozzle on the vacuum cleaner and walk over the surface ― this is what dry cleaning looks like. For upholstered furniture with delicate fabrics, choose the lowest power of the vacuum cleaner.
IMPORTANT: Before removing any stain on the sofas. The sofas must be vacuumed. Otherwise, all the dust will rise and dirty stains will be added to the stain.
Wet cleaning with a bedsheet
Wet an old sheet and wring it out in a typewriter. So, the sheet will be slightly damp. Cover the sofas/chair with a sheet and lightly pat the surface (with your hand or duster). Wet cleaning is not suitable for furniture with silk and velour upholstery. So, the structure of the upholstery is broken and the appearance is lost.
IMPORTANT: After wet cleaning the leather sofas, polish them with petroleum jelly or oil. Do this on the still wet upholstery. So, the skin will not crack and retain its shine.
