A sanitary napkin or sanitary pad is an absorbent item used by a menstruating woman for absorbing blood flow from the vagina while menstruating, recovering from any gynecologic surgery, bleeding after giving birth or in any necessary situation of vaginal bleeding. A sanitary pad is a menstrual hygiene product that is worn externally, generally by sticking it to the underwear. These absorbent napkins need to be changed after a certain amount of time.
With the invention of sanitary napkins, a large number of women have shifted from using cloth during menstruation to using sanitary pads. These sanitary napkins are made in a standard length applicable for worldwide women. Along with the changed time, this product is evolved and made better, like extra large pads, dry sheet, extra care sanitary pad etc., according to the requirement of women.
The use of sanitary napkins dates back to the 1940s. Then, these napkins were available with a belt for wearing them. After some time, sanitary napkins with adhesive came into being. Menstrual pads are manufactured from a range of different products based on the manufacturing country and society. These napkins are produced keeping in mind some factors, such as the capability of maintaining hygiene, economic factor, comfort and environment-friendly characteristics.
Types of Sanitary Napkin
There are a variety of sanitary napkins available in the market. They are as follows -
• Organic Cotton Pads: Many women might develop rashes and skin eruption due to the latex present in the normal sanitary napkins. Organic cotton sanitary napkins are produced of various natural products and are therefore free from beaches and chemicals.
• Cloth Sanitary Napkin: Cloth sanitary napkins are an eco-friendly variant of sanitary napkins. The cloth pads are made of a very soft textured fabric. Because of made of cloth, this type can be washed and reused. Though this concept comes hygiene standard issues.
• Reusable Sanitary Pads: These menstrual pads are also known as washable pads. These pads bear a slit right in the centre, which is used for inserting absorbent liners. The reusable sanitary pads are an eco-friendly alternative since these can be reused and does not call for disposal.
• Regular and Heavy Flow Sanitary Pad: For women with normal flow in menstruation, a regular sanitary pad is ideal. A regular pad has a lighter build and appropriate for women who prefer changing the napkin every few hours. Whereas the heavy flow pads are comparatively bulkier and have the capability of extra absorption. The heavy flow pads also come with side wings.
Precaution: The menstrual days or any period of having vaginal blood flow call for taking extra care of intimate hygiene. A woman who uses a sanitary napkin for soaking the blood flow should change the napkin every 4 to 5 hours and never continue with the same pad for more than 8 hours. One who uses reusable pads should clean them properly after every use. Even the reusable pads need to be discarded after a certain number of uses.
