Choosing the right screws for your project can help ensure that they are securely fastened and able to hold their load. Using the right screw size for a specific material also helps prevent damage to the threads or the material. Measuring screw sizes is a simple process that only requires a ruler or tape measure and a screw gauge guide to get an accurate result. Knowing your screw sizes is important for a variety of projects, including home improvement and carpentry. Screws are typically sized by their diameter and threads per inch or, as in the case of bolts, their diameter and length.

Screws are sized by their basic diameter (called the major diameter) and then by the number of threads per inch, which is the distance from one point on the screw to the next. The major diameter is usually given as a one or two digit number and the threads per inch are indicated by the second number, followed by a hyphen and then the shaft length in inches.

Screws also come in a wide range of head types, such as Phillips-head or slot-head screws, rounded heads (also known as dome or button heads), pan heads and Torx-head screws. The screw type you choose depends on the kind of materials you work with and the head type can impact how deep into the material the screws should go. Some screws are designed for multipurpose use while others are more specialised and have a unique build to suit their application.  1/4 lag screw pilot hole
