Series Disappointment

Fever series by Karen Marie Moning: Italics are spoilery.

I recently started reading the fourth book in the Fever series. Sadly I reached chapter four and struggled to get through it. I went a little past it and had to put the book down while I debated whether or not I wanted to read it. Now I'm okay with dark but this just wasn't my dark.

Now I have heard people talk about this book but I think I already had  been aware of and apparently Jericho is the one to swoon over. Uh no. Sure I'd love to live in that bookstore as long as he got his ass out of there along with whatever is going on underneath the garage. Okay I get it the fae are evil and rape you so much you're begging for me. I can deal with that because it wasn't super graphic. At the end of book three Mac was captured by the fae. In book four and in chapter four you find out that Jericho is raping Mac to cure her. What the fuck? I just get the feeling that these two are going to be a couple which I don't understand.

Sadly I have to bid this series farewell because I just can't with that. I've really been enjoying the October Daye series and I have a pretty good feeling that this series won't disappoint me like the Fever series did. Yes the Wayward Children series is great but check out Seanan's other series. She is a writing machine and also writes under the name Mira Grant.

Anita Blake series by Laurell K Hamilton

Many people that have given up on this series which I believe is still going on and up to I think twenty-five say that things go downhill after Obsidian Butterfly. I've read up to Skin Trade so I went beyond that point and I have to confess that I'm torn about this series. It started off great. Anita is this vampire executioner who works with the police. In this world people know about vampires and there are even churches where you can become a vampire. She also raises the dead. I once saw a comment that said something along the lines of if it didn't go the sex route the series would be one epic fail. I think that's bullshit. Sex isn't an essential ingredient to make a book great. Also over time the sex scenes just got more and more drawn out and overpowered the book.

Anita is pretty much turned into a succubus and the irony is that Georgina from the Georgina Kincaid series by Richelle Mead which features an actual succubus isn't focused on all the sex she's having like this one is. In order to pretty much live Anita has to have sex. What the fuck is that about? Newsflash sex isn't food. It isn't required to live.

Her Merry Gentry series is one I'd consider going back to. It started off with sex but it didn't seem to be too overpowering at least not that I can remember. It is a fae series where Merry lives in the regular world and she's a PI I believe. There seems to be a trend with what I'm reading with magical PI people.

And I'll end on a here are some tips that might be helpful.

Don't go on Book Outlet unless you have specific authors or books in mind. If you're patient wait to see if that book shows up on Book Outlet. Down Among The Sticks And Bones is a pricey book but it has shown up on there along with the first book for $6.99. Don't fill your cart up with books simply because they're cheap.

Take advantage of the library. I just couldn't afford to support my book habit with buying books. I will always love books but I've come to love and appreciate ebooks too. Audio books are just not my thing but I won't bash them like some people have no problem doing with mass market paperbacks despite them being the absolute best way aside from an ebook to read walk with. I know what I'm talking about since I've been doing that for years. Trade paperbacks are too awkward and once you're over the 400 page mark the thing just gets too floppy and heavy. Also I can turn the page of the paperback with my left thumb which can't be done with the trade paperback. If you get ebooks or audio books you don't have to worry about returning them since they do that automatically. Get Overdrive and Hoopla and if you can have multiple library cards that allow you even more access.

Instead of buying a book that sounds good see if the library has it first. I'm able to recommend books and they have bought books I've suggested. Also take advantage of being able to get a sample of most books on Amazon. Instead of running to Goodreads try reading the book to see if you're interested in. I wish Goodreads would get rid of the numbers because they really mean nothing. One person gave a book three stars for a book she didn't like. So why did you give that rating to something you didn't even like? For me a three is a good book by an author I'd be open to reading again I just wouldn't be racing to check to see what other books this person has written. It seems like people aren't thinking for themselves when it comes to what they are reading. Even if you share similar tastes with someone that doesn't mean you're going to feel the same way about every book and if you take advantage of the library you won't have to unhaul books so much. I think of it as a test drive. I tend to avoid getting books at random unless I find something at the Dollar Tree which isn't something that happens a lot and most of the time I'm getting used books of authors I'm already familiar with. I read Going Bovine from the library and fell in love with the author so I slowly started collecting her books. Original link
