Everything you need about SGPA to percentage for study abroad — formulas, an interactive calculator, country-by-country requirements, and common mistakes to avoid. Updated for 2026 admissions.
01 — What is SGPA and why do you need to convert it?
SGPA (Semester Grade Point Average) measures your academic performance in a single semester on a 10-point scale. While Indian universities widely use this system, universities in the USA, UK, Canada, Australia, and Germany evaluate international applicants using percentage or their own GPA scales — making conversion essential for any study abroad application.
You will need a converted percentage for: university admission forms, scholarship applications, visa documentation, and employer background checks abroad.
Note: SGPA is semester-specific. If a university asks for your overall performance, use your CGPA (Cumulative Grade Point Average), which is the average of all your semester SGPAs.
02 — The conversion formulas explained
There is no single universal formula. The correct one depends on your university. Here are the most common:
Percentage = (SGPA × 10) − 7.5
Standard UGC/AICTE formula — used by most Indian universities including Mumbai University, AKTU, Anna University
Percentage = SGPA × 9.5
Used by CBSE and many private/autonomous universities
Percentage = (SGPA − 0.75) × 10
Alternative version used by VTU and some technical universities — mathematically identical to the first formula
Always check the back of your official marksheet first. If your university states a specific formula there, use that — not the generic one — in all applications abroad.
03 — Country-by-country requirements
Click a country to see how it evaluates your percentage and what additional requirements you need to prepare.

United States — how your marks are evaluated
Grading system used 4.0 GPA scale (converted via WES evaluation)
Minimum requirement60–70% for most programs; 75%+ for top universities
Evaluation body WES (World Education Services) or equivalent
Required language exams GRE/GMAT + IELTS/TOEFL
US universities do not accept raw percentages — WES evaluation converts it to a 4.0 GPA. Allow 2–4 weeks.
04 — Quick reference conversion table (SGPA to percentage for study abroad)
Reference table using the standard UGC formula: (SGPA × 10) − 7.5
Reference table using the standard UGC formula: (SGPA × 10) − 7.5
| SGPA | Percentage | US 4.0 GPA | UK Class | General standing |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 9.5 – 10.0 | 87.5 – 92.5% | ~3.8–4.0 | First (1st) | Excellent |
| 8.5 – 9.4 | 77.5 – 86.5% | ~3.4–3.7 | First (1st) | Very good |
| 7.5 – 8.4 | 67.5 – 76.5% | ~2.9–3.3 | Upper 2nd (2:1) | Good |
| 6.5 – 7.4 | 57.5 – 66.5% | ~2.3–2.8 | Lower 2nd (2:2) | Competitive |
| 5.5 – 6.4 | 47.5 – 56.5% | ~1.7–2.2 | Third (3rd) | Borderline |
| < 5.5 | < 47.5% | <1.7 | Below Third | Difficult |
US universities rarely accept the percentage directly — they typically require WES (World Education Services) credential evaluation to convert it to a 4.0 GPA. Start this process early as it takes 2–4 weeks.
05 — Common mistakes to avoid

06 — Application checklist
Find your official university conversion formula (check the back of your marksheet or the academic handbook)Calculate each semester's SGPA-to-percentage; compute the aggregate if required
Cross-check converted percentage against destination country's minimum requirement
For the USA: initiate WES credential evaluation (allow 2–4 weeks)
Request an official conversion letter from your university registrar if applying to UK, Canada, or Germany
State the conversion formula used in all application documents and embassy submissions
Prepare language proficiency scores (IELTS, TOEFL, PTE) — required by all countries alongside academic marks
Keep copies of all conversion documents for visa interview and background checks
Pro tip: Some Indian universities issue an official "Conversion Certificate" from the registrar's office. This single document is accepted by most foreign embassies and universities and eliminates any formula disputes.
