In the aftermath of the World Cup 2023 final, former Pakistan batter Shoaib Malik has voiced criticism against Indian wicketkeeper-batter KL Rahul for his approach during the match. Rahul played a patient innings, scoring 66 runs off 107 balls on a slow track at the Narendra Modi Stadium, after India was put into bat by Australia.

Despite a challenging start for India, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul formed a crucial partnership in the middle overs, contributing 67 runs for the fourth wicket. While Kohli showcased consistency with a resilient half-century, Rahul's approach came under scrutiny as he aimed to bat through the 50 overs.

“KL Rahul was just trying to bat through the 50 overs. He should not have done that and should have tried to play his game. If you're batting in tough conditions and the boundaries aren't coming easily, then at least you've got to rotate strike. That wasn't happening; there were a lot of dot balls," expressed Shoaib Malik in a commentary on A Sports.

Malik praised the Australian bowlers for their strategic use of the venue's dimensions, employing smart lines and lengths to keep the Indian batting lineup in check.

"The venue in which this match was played had long side boundaries. The Australians utilised these boundaries very well. They said we won't let you hit us down the ground, and you can hit us square of the wicket. Their bowlers used variations very well. The Australians assessed the Indian conditions better than the Indians and then executed their plans," Malik added.

Australia emerged victorious in the World Cup final, defeating India by 6 wickets.
