Should a Barn Door Be Wider Than the Opening?

Choosing the correct width for your barn door is critical. While a door shouldn't be wider than the opening, it should cover the entire space. This includes horizontal or vertical wall space and at least a quarter-inch overhang. It should also leave an additional half-inch space between the door and the floor. You may also wish to consider hiring an assistant to help you with the process. In addition to ensuring proper door alignment, you should also check that the strap hangers are positioned straight.

The barn doors don't lay flush against the opening despite their traditional look. Instead, they hover over it, creating gaps. These gaps may interfere with sound separation and privacy. In addition, they might not be sturdy enough to support the door. If you're concerned about the security of your home, you can install a sliding barn door. Ensure that the hardware supporting the door is strong enough to hold up the door.

To install a sliding barn door, you'll need to determine the width of the opening. Make sure you measure both the width of the opening and the height of the railing system. If you don't measure properly, the door may stick and damage your floor. To prevent this, check the door's dimensions with your home architect. Measure the entire opening if the door is too wide or too narrow.
