The Vedantasara of Sadananda - Part 1 is a course that aims to provide students with a well-informed perspective on Advaita Vedanta philosophy. This philosophy is one of the Vaidika Darshanas, which are the six schools of Indian philosophy based on the Vedas. Advaita Vedanta is a popular and dynamic school that answers fundamental questions about life and human condition.

The course is based on the Vedantasara, a text written by Sadananda, an authoritative Acharya of the Advaita tradition. The text is composed in prose form and consists of forty-two Gadyanshas. The Vedantasara is prescribed at the graduate level at universities in India and is an entry-level text for those interested in studying Advaita Vedanta.

The course is divided into two parts, with the first course covering approximately half the text, and the second course covering the remaining portion. Prior knowledge of Sanskrit or Vedanta philosophy is not necessary to take up this course, as a PDF file of the main text with Devanagari and Roman script will be shared with the students. In addition, supplementary reading material will be shared in PDF form.

The course learning objectives are:

To distinguish the fundamentals of Advaita Vedanta Philosophy, including the nature of Brahman, Maya, Avidya, Vidya, and Samsara. To establish a strong grasp of the technical Sanskrit terms involved such as panchikarnam, Iswara, jiva, smasti, vyasti. To evaluate the view that Advaita advocates renunciation of the world, developing deep insight into the concepts of ‘mind’, ‘ego’, ‘intellect’ and ‘atma’. To discuss the four mahavakyas and correlate the Vedantic teachings of the current text with the Upanishads and the Bhagavadgītā. To demonstrate a deep interest in the Sad Dharshanas, especially the schools such as Sankhya, Yoga, Nyaya, and Vaisheshika.

The class structure consists of a minimum of one contact hour every week. The class is structured to promote discussion and debate based on self-study and reflection each week. While the content being discussed in each class will be concluded within 60 minutes, the discussion time will be free format and can continue for an additional 30 minutes maximum. During the course, students will be required to answer one assignment at the end of the course, and a model question paper will be provided early in the course so that students can take guidance from the instructor if necessary.

In conclusion, the Vedantasara of Sadananda - Part 1 is a course that aims to provide students with a deep understanding of Advaita Vedanta philosophy. Through the study of the Vedantasara, students will gain insight into the nature of Brahman, Maya, Avidya, Vidya, and Samsara, as well as the technical Sanskrit terms involved. Additionally, they will evaluate the view that Advaita advocates renunciation of the world and develop deep insight into the concepts of ‘mind’, ‘ego’, ‘intellect’ and ‘atma’. The course structure promotes discussion and debate and requires students to answer one assignment at the end of the course.
