Surrogacy is an assisted reproduction technique whereby a woman accepts to carry a pregnancy and deliver a baby for another person or couple. This is mainly applied by people who cannot carry a pregnancy to full term, such as same-sex couples, people with some health conditions, or those who have had many miscarriages. Surrogacy is legal in India, and the surrogacy cost in India is relatively more economical than other countries.

Surrogacy Cost in India

Surrogacy cost in India according to different factors. It can be due to the type of surrogacy, whether gestational or traditional, and location. It may also be because of the reputation of the clinic or the experience of the doctor. Therefore, on average, the cost of surrogacy in India can range from ₹15,00,000 to ₹20,00,000.

Is Surrogacy 100% Successful in India?

Surrogacy is not 100% successful in India or anywhere else. The success rate of surrogacy is dependent on several factors, such as the age of the egg donor, the quality of the sperm, the health of the surrogate mother, and the skill of the fertility doctor.

As compared to other countries, overall Indian surrogacy success is around 70% to 80% per attempt or in other words, where attempts are made with 100% resultant outcome on surrogacy, pregnancy chances are 70 to 80%. If the surrogate mother carries a pregnancy successfully in the past then the success rate increases manifold.

Is IVF Better than Surrogacy?

Both IVF and surrogacy are forms of assisted reproduction. However, they are applied in different conditions. IVF simply involves stimulating the ovaries to produce more eggs than normally would; these eggs are then collected, fertilized in a laboratory with sperm, and then transferred into the uterus of either the intended mother or a surrogate mother.

Surrogacy is the carrying of pregnancy and delivery of the baby by a surrogate mother for the intended parents.

IVF is indicated in couples when the woman can carry the pregnancy herself but cannot conceive in vivo. Surrogacy is indicated in those who cannot carry any pregnancy.

In terms of success rates, IVF is more successful than surrogacy, especially for the younger women. According to the American Society for Reproductive Medicine, between 41% and 71% of cycles may be successful for IVF, depending on the woman's age.

Whose Egg Is Used in Surrogacy?

In surrogacy, a surrogate mother can either use eggs from the intended mother or an egg donor. Once the intended mother's eggs are used, the process comes to be known as gestational surrogacy. The intention mother undergoes IVF and gets the resulting embryo transferred into her surrogate mother's uterus.

In this case, if a donor egg is used, the process is known as donor egg surrogacy. The egg donor would undergo IVF and the embryo resulting from it is then implanted into the uterus of the surrogate mother.

What Are the Risks of Surrogacy?

Surrogacy carries risks, surrogate mother and intended parents.

  • Risks to the surrogate mother's health: urrogacy comes with all the pregnancy risks such as miscarriage, preterm labor, and complications at delivery.
  • Risks to the baby's health: There is a slight risk that the baby might have a birth defect or genetic disorder.
  • Psychological risks: Surrogacy may also pose an emotional challenge both to the surrogate mother and the intended parents.
  • Legal risks: Surrogacy is illegal in some countries, and there may be legal complications if the intended parents are from a country where surrogacy is illegal.

Who Is the Real Mother in Surrogacy?

In the case of gestational surrogacy, when the intended mother's eggs are used, the intended mother is regarded as the biological mother of the child. In the case of donor egg surrogacy, when an egg donor's eggs are used, the intended mother is not the biological mother but is regarded as the legal mother of the child.

She is not the legal mother of the child because she has an agreement with the intended parents to carry and give birth to the child on their behalf.

Conclusion

Surrogacy is also possible for people who cannot carry a pregnancy. The cost of surrogacy in India is usually lower compared to other countries and estimated to be between ₹15,00,000 to ₹23,00,000. Still, surrogacy is not 100% successful and poses some risks for the surrogate mother and the intended parents. It is therefore crucial to consider all factors and then advice from a fertility doctor or a legal expert before taking the surrogacy.

The surrogacy cost in Delhi between ₹18 and ₹20 lakh and covers postpartum care, legal, medical, and financing alternatives.
