The United Nations established the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity. Like many other countries, the UK has committed to achieving the SDGs by 2030. But how is the UK performing in its efforts to achieve these goals? In this blog, we will examine the UK's progress toward the SDGs, highlighting areas where progress has been made and identifying areas where further work is needed.

The 17 Goals provide an internationally agreed-upon framework applicable at the national, regional, and local levels, complementing and reinforcing current plans and commitments. They enable the Government to collaborate cross-departmentally and with stakeholders to develop programs and policies linked with the domestic and international demands of our economy, society, and environment.

Several of the Government's goals – to invest in health and social care, to level up the country with better education, housing, skills, and infrastructure, to lead the way globally to reach Net Zero by 2050, and to strengthen the Union to assist solve local problems – can be realized through alignment with the SDGs and mobilization of the numerous partners from the business, investor, civil society, and academia sectors that are already committed to the Goals. To accomplish this, however, all levels of the British Government must display political leadership of the highest caliber on this Agenda.

17 Sustainable Development Goals

No Poverty - The UK has made progress in reducing poverty, but work is still to be done. In 2019, the poverty rate in the UK was 22%, down from 24% in 2010. However, this still means that 14.4 million people in the UK live in poverty.

Zero Hunger - The UK has made good progress towards reducing hunger, with only 2.5% of the population undernourished. However, there are still concerns about food insecurity, particularly among low-income families.

Good Health and Well-being - The UK has improved life expectancy and reduced infant mortality rates. However, there are still significant health inequalities, particularly in mental health, where there is a significant gap between the poorest and richest in society.

Quality Education - The UK has a good education system, but there are still concerns about educational inequality, particularly among disadvantaged children and those with special educational needs.

Gender Equality - The UK has made progress towards gender equality, with women now accounting for almost half of the workforce. However, there are still significant gaps in pay and representation in leadership positions.

Clean Water and Sanitation - The UK has good access to clean water and sanitation. However, there are concerns about the impact of climate change on water resources, particularly in areas prone to drought.

Affordable and Clean Energy - The UK has made progress towards increasing the use of renewable energy, but there is still work to be done to reduce carbon emissions and increase energy efficiency.

Decent Work and Economic Growth - The UK has a strong economy and low unemployment rates. However, there are concerns about the quality of work, particularly low-paid and insecure jobs.

Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure - The UK has made progress in developing infrastructure, particularly in transport and communications. However, there are still concerns about the digital divide, particularly in rural areas.

Reduced Inequalities - The UK has made progress in reducing inequalities, particularly regarding race and disability. However, there are still significant inequalities in income and wealth.

Sustainable Cities and Communities - The UK has made progress in promoting sustainable development in urban areas, with initiatives to reduce carbon emissions and increase green spaces. However, there are still concerns about housing affordability and the impact of gentrification on communities.

Responsible Consumption and Production - The UK has made progress in reducing waste and increasing recycling rates. However, there is still a long way to go to achieve a circular economy.

Climate Action - The UK has made progress in reducing carbon emissions, but there is still work to be done to meet its net-zero targets. The UK has set a target to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050, but recent reports suggest that more needs to be done to achieve this.

Life Below Water - The UK has made progress in protecting marine habitats, particularly by creating marine protected areas. However, there are still concerns about overfishing and pollution.

Life on Land - The UK has progressed in protecting biodiversity and preserving natural habitats. However, there are still concerns about deforestation and habitat loss, particularly the impacts of agriculture and development.

Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions - The UK has a strong legal system and democratic institutions. However, there are concerns about human rights abuses and the treatment of minority groups.

Partnerships for the Goals - The UK is committed to working with other countries to achieve the SDGs. However, there are concerns about the impact of Brexit on international cooperation and development.

Examples of initiatives that could help the UK achieve the SDGs include:

Investing in sustainable infrastructure and renewable energy to reduce carbon emissions and promote economic growth. Addressing inequality through measures such as a living wage, affordable housing, and accessible healthcare and education. Protecting and restoring natural habitats to preserve biodiversity and promote sustainable development. Strengthening partnerships between governments, businesses, and civil society to ensure coordinated action towards the SDGs. By working towards the SDGs, the UK can promote sustainable development, reduce inequality, and create a more prosperous and equitable society.

Conclusion:

The UK has made progress towards achieving the SDGs, particularly in reducing poverty and hunger and improving access to education and healthcare. However, there are still significant challenges to be addressed, particularly in reducing inequalities, promoting sustainable development, and mitigating the impacts of climate change. A coordinated and sustained effort will be required from Government, businesses, and civil society to ensure that the UK achieves the SDGs by 2030.
