THE BRAIN AND BODY IN TRAUMA: AN UNDERSTANDING
Understanding how the brain and body respond to trauma requires knowledge of several brain regions. The limbic system, which is found in the brain's center, the forebrain, also known as the prefrontal cortex, and the brain stem are among them.
Adrenaline rushes through the body after a stressful occurrence, and the limbic system's amygdala, which stores memories, imprints them. The emotional impact of the situation, together with its strength and impulse, is stored in the amygdala.
The amygdala can interpret the emotional importance of an event based on sensory input, such as "fear, speed, tension, excitement, not life-threatening," when a person is riding a roller coaster. In other words, the trauma memory is not preserved as a tale but rather according to how our five senses were perceiving the event at the moment it occurred. The amygdala preserves the visual pictures of trauma as sensory fragments. Fragments of noises, tastes, scents, and visual images are used to store memories.
The prefrontal cortex, located in the front of the brain, is where logical thought, conscious awareness, and language interpretation take place. People can experience trauma and go into a fight, flight, or freeze state, which can cause the prefrontal cortex to shut down. The trauma causes the brain to become somewhat chaotic and overloaded, while the body enters a state of survival and turns down the higher cognitive and linguistic systems. A strong stress reaction that is permanently imprinted is the result of the metabolic shutdown.
