The crew member who gave Baldwin the weapon became the subject

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A crew member says he has raised security concerns in the past about an assistant director who authorities say unknowingly handed over a prop gun to actor Alec Baldwin who killed a cinematographer on set.

Maggie Goll, a licensed prop maker and fireworks expert, said in a statement that she filed an internal complaint with the executive producer of Hulu’s “Into the Dark” series in 2019 over concerns about assistant director Dave Halls’ behavior on set. Goll said in a telephone interview Sunday that Halls ignored safety protocols for guns and fireworks and tried to resume shooting after the fireworks controller lost consciousness on set.

Halls has not returned phone calls and email messages seeking comment.

This week’s fatal shooting and several previous experiences point to larger safety issues that need to be addressed, Goll said, adding that the safety and well-being of crew members is a key issue in the ongoing contract negotiations between unions representing film and TV workers and producer groups.

“This situation is not about Dave Halls. … This is simply not one of those people,” he said. “It’s a bigger conversation about safety on set and what we’re trying to achieve with that culture.”

Baldwin fired a prop gun at the set of the film “Rust” in New Mexico on Thursday, killing 42-year-old Halyna Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza, who was standing behind him.

The gun Baldwin used was one of three that firearms specialists, or “armor”, installed on a train outside the building where a scene was being rehearsed, according to court records. Halls took a gun from the wagon and handed it to Baldwin, indicating it was safe by shouting “cold guns,” the court newspaper said. But it was loaded with live ammunition, according to records.

Baldwin, 63, known for his roles in “30 Rock” and “The Hunt for Red October” and his impressions of former President Donald Trump on “Saturday Night Live,” described the murder as a “tragic accident.”

Goll says it shouldn’t happen because there are “so many steps you have to go through … that the chances of getting there should be impossible.”
