A wall-hung toilet works seamlessly in any bathroom layout but often has a hefty price tag. Is it worth the splurge? We investigate the benefits and drawbacks of installing a wall-hung toilet for your next bathroom remodelling project

Pros of a Wall-Hung Toilet

Clean and Modern Appearance

A wall-hung toilet is the bathroom fixture you need to achieve a more contemporary and neat-looking bathroom. Most floor-mounted toilets look outdated, whereas a wall-hung toilet adds a modern flair to your bathroom without compromising floor space.

Complies with Standard Building Codes

Since wall-hung toilets are compact, they are easier to customise and install in your bathroom. Their size also makes them comply with building codes. On the other hand, a floor-mounted toilet may require further inspection, such as measuring the dimensions.

In some cities, building codes need at least 21 inches in front of the toilet. Wall-hung toilets can save space by 10 inches by pushing the tank into the wall. Plus, the bowl can sit 15 to 19 inches off the ground.

Easier to Clean

Scrubbing every nook and cranny of a floor-mounted toilet is time-consuming, especially the toilet bowl base. A wall-hung toilet saves you time scouring your toilet bowl.

The lack of a base lessens the time you have to spend cleaning your toilet. You can scrub the bowl as usual and mop or sweep the floor below the toilet for faster and more hassle-free cleaning.

Faster to Unclog

The tank and carrier connect to the studs, hidden behind the drywall, with an opening for flush buttons. You can access the tank through this opening. In case something goes wrong after installation, the flush panel can pop off easily, and a hand can reach out to do the plumbing manually.

Cons of a Wall Hung Toilet

More Expensive Than Floor-Mounted Toilets

Since wall-hung toilets are more customisable and are harder to install, these bathroom fixtures don't come cheap. Aside from the toilet itself, you must consider the components of the wall-hung toilet in the budget. You must also pay a sizeable amount for professional installation.

Takes a Lot of Work to Install

As we've mentioned, wall-hung toilets are harder to install. Replacing a floor-mounted toilet with a wall-mounted option requires opening a wall, relocating the waste pipe, and patching the floor tiles. This process is typically more invasive than floor-mounted toilets.

When choosing a tank, consider whether your framing has 2x4 or 2x6 studs since manufacturers have carriers for both types. Since you might need to make configurations with your current bathroom setup, this factor adds to the cost of installing a wall-hung toilet.

After knowing the advantages and disadvantages, getting a wall-hung toilet boils down to preference and whether you have the budget to invest in one. If you want to modernise your bathroom, they make a neat upgrade you can pair with a new basin mixer and shower. Good luck with your bathroom remodel, and choose your fixtures wisely!
